MLB A.L. Cy Young? You decide.

Do you value wins? ERA? Strikeouts? Complete and utter badassery? Whichever statistic you value most, will probably help you decide on your choice for Cy Young.

I think it's only going to Sabathia, Greinke, or Hernandez but I'll list a couple of others to please fans of those teams.

    Id probably go

    1. Grienke
    2. Felix
    3. Halladay
    4. Sabathia

Felix still has a strong shot of stealing it if he continues his incredible run. Then again Grienke has a .28 ERA in September.

Grienke isn't a lock like you think he would be.

Felix's numbers are fairly closer than preception. If he only didn't **** up in April.

Lester? He's not even the best pitcher on his team.

Greinke should win it. I'd be fine with Felix. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it to Sabathia though.

Beckett took himself out of the race when he failed to show up after the all-star break. The only Boston SP that's been as consistent as Lester lately has been Buchholz, and I'm pretty sure he's not going to get any Cy Young consideration.

I don't think Lester will either...not serious consideration outside of Boston anyway

Greinke did a very good job of making his case today. He kept the Twins' hitters off-balance and pitched very well when he needed to.

Felix was wildly effective in his next to last start:

    7.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 2 Wild Pitches, 2 HBP, 120 pitches.

He is on line to improve to 18-5 this season. ERA remains around 2.48 (exact same when he began the day)

Hernandez went 15-2 with a 1.98 ERA after Wakamatsu called him out for not stepping up during a sloppy loss to the Angels on May 19.

Re: A.L. Cy Young? You decide.

CC's out of the running because he didn't get 20 wins. Although I did see an interesting stat. If the quality start was increased to 7 IP, CC would lead the American League.

I have a really really hard time picking against Zack Greinke, but Felix has quietly put up the numbers. 5 losses is amazing. I always think losses are a better indicator of a pitcher's performance than wins. And only 5 is really really good. Plus his ERA is almost as dirty as Greinke's

I almost feel like this last stretch by Verlander may have swayed the vote towards him.

Re: A.L. Cy Young? You decide.

Not a chance. If anything he will probably be 4th.

Felix Hernandez has made a better and longer sustained run than Verlander. Just because you're in the weak AL Central doesnt make you better because you were in a pennant race (they were both only 1 game better than the Rays and M's)

    Felix:
1st in W (19-5 is the best in the AL, thats a side note)
    3rd in IP
    4th in K
2nd in ERA (Verlander is a full run worse)
    4th in WHIP
    T-1st in OPP BA

    Grienke:
    7th in Ws
    5th in IP
    2nd in Ks
    1st in ERA
    1st in WHIP
    T-1st in OPP BA (w/Felix)

    Sabathia
    T-1st in W (19-8)
    4th in IP
    7th in Ks
4th in ERA (Distant 4th at that)
    3rd in WHIP
    3rd in OPP BA

    Verlander
    T-1st in W (19-9)
    1st in IP
    1st in Ks
6th in ERA (1 run behind Felix)
    5th in WHIP
    T-7th in OPP BA

    Halladay
    T-4th in W (17-10)
2nd in IP (Verlander passed him on the last day by 1 IP)
    5th in Ks
    3rd in ERA
    2nd in WHIP
Not on the Radar with Opp BA

    Note:
Grienke has 6 CG, 3 SHO, and only allowed 11 HRs all season
Halladay has 9 CG, 4 SHO, and only 35 BB
Felix is the only pitcher in the top 5 of all 6 noted stats.
Sabathia is the only pitcher (as of today) thats on a playoff team.
Verlander could become the only other pitcher.

And on this note Im changing my vote to Felix. This was pretty much my logic why.

Re: A.L. Cy Young? You decide.

My vote is still Greinke, but Verlander made it such a fascinating race. If Detroit wins on tuesday, they can look back at sunday's start and thank him for keeping them alive. I think Greinke needed to own on his final start, and he didn't, he just has too many losses to outright ignore (I know, it's mostly not all his fault, it's still a glaring number since he has just 16 wins). The voters look at things like that.

Greinke, Felix, Verlander.. the race is on kids!

As I said before, those voters who do hold those things against Greinke should be waterboarded under the fountains of Kauffman Stadium.
