"The Washington Nationals placed slugging first baseman Adam Dunn on waivers Tuesday afternoon -- a standard move they were expected to make, a source told ESPN.
As a player on revocable waivers, Dunn can be pulled back in the event he is claimed by another team. Other clubs have 48 hours to place a waiver claim on the 30-year-old slugger, with National League teams getting the first crack at acquiring him.
It is widely believed that Dunn will be claimed by an NL team before any American League club has an opportunity to acquire him. The Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees all expressed interest in Dunn before the July 31 MLB non-waiver trade deadline.
If another team places a claim on Dunn, the Nationals would have three options. They could allow him to go to that team, trade him to the team awarded the claim, or pull him off waivers and have him finish the rest of the season in D.C. Once a player is pulled off waivers he cannot be placed back on it. If the Nationals let Dunn go to another team, that team absorbs Dunn's contract."
