Blue Jays So You're Saying There's A Chance

The Blue Jays as of right now sit just 7.5 games out of the AL Wild Card and are crushing one of the teams ahead of them 10-0 in the 4th (Yankees). With the win they will be an even 7 games behind the Red Sox. What are Jays fans feeling? Any hope? Rios is getting hot at the right time and Halladay and Burnett can lead a charge. What do you guys think? I think they can be a huge factor in this race either as contender till the last week or as spoiler. I say right now, they still have a chance. Its a small chance but its there.

    Re: So You're Saying There's A Chance

At first I was thinking spoiler....but I looked at their schedule...and besides a couple of series against the O's, they play against the Rays, Yanks, Red Sox, White Sox and Twins. All of these teams (maybe other than the Yanks) are either leading in WC or their division, or are in a super tight race for the top spot. If they can keep up the dominant performances, they have a great chance to win either the division or WC. If they do stumble at somepoint, however, they can play spoiler like no other.

The door to playoffs leads through Toronto.

    Re: So You're Saying There's A Chance

They will have to win almost each series left in the season to even have a chance

But since Cito took over as manager the Jays have been 7-8 games over .500, also Adam Lind and Joe Inglett have took over, Lind has 9 HR when the team lead is 11 HR. Inglett has been a great lead-off hitter, as of now, both are hitting .305 avg

as for injuries, Dustin McGowan is done for the season, Aaron Hill (very likely) and Scott Rolen (not sure yet) could be done for the year though, also Accardo might be shut down to be ready for next season (currently making rehab appearances)

Did I mention I love Cito Gaston? I just thinks he was mistreated and fired for having no talent to work with. Great to have him back in the game.

    Re: So You're Saying There's A Chance

I think you have in another thread

don't know why it took him this long to get back into managing a big league team, personal choice maybe, didn't feel right with some teams, or having no control, or maybe he was blacklisted for some reason

in the year he got fired in 97, the lineup was
C Benito Santiago - big Free Agent signing that never worked out
    1B Carlos Delgado
    2B Carlos Garcia - who
    3B Ed Sprague
    SS Alex Gonzalez
    LF Jose Cruz Jr
    CF Otis Nixon - what
RF Orlando Merced - huge Free Agent bust
DH Joe Carter - yes that's right

    Rotation
    Roger Clemens
    Pat Hentgen
    Woody Williams
    Robert Person
    Chris Carpenter and Juan Guzman

    No real closer

Maybe because as Alex Gonzalez once said, Cito Gaston was the guy who kept Shawn Green out of the starting lineup.

    Shawn who?

They need some big wins here in the next couple of series, and they should be still in the hunt. A couple of loses, and the threat is over, but they will be indeed a big spoiler.

    Re: So You're Saying There's A Chance

So the Jays just strung together 10 wins in a row. Tampa, Boston, Chicago, Minny, all involved in this win streak. Entering tonight's game they were 7 back of Boston for the wild card spot, and 8 1/2 back of top spot in the east. A loss tonight ended the streak, but lets be honest, it was something to behold.

So is there still a chance?

If the Twins start to crumble, they might get ahead of them, but there's no way they are going to catch Boston or the Rays.

7 more games against Boston could say otherwise

but still a very long shot
