TORONTO -- The Blue Jays utilized the waiver wire on Friday, claiming pitcher Mike Gosling and shortstop Pedro Lopez from the Cincinnati Reds.
Last season, Gosling appeared in 23 games for the Reds, going 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA over 33 innings. During his time as a reliever for Cincinnati, the 27-year-old left-hander struck out 32, walked 28 and yielded 18 earned runs on 42 hits.
Gosling also spent time last season at Triple-A, where he went 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 13 starts with Louisville. He limited opposing batters to a .242 batting average over that span as well. Gosling has appeared in 43 games at the big league level between stints with the Reds and Diamondbacks.
The 23-year-old Lopez hit .178 in a brief 14-game stint with the Reds last season. He also spent time between Triple-A Louisville and Triple-A Chattanooga (White Sox), hitting .284 with 13 doubles, three home runs and 28 RBIs over 75 games. Cincinnati claimed Lopez off waivers from Chicago on May 22.
In order to clear room on their 40-man roster for Gosling and Lopez, the Blue Jays outrighted right-handers Jordan De Jong, Lee Gronkiewicz and Jamie Vermilyea to Triple-A Syracuse. The roster currently stands at 39, which does not include the five players (B.J. Ryan, Vernon Wells, Troy Glaus, Gustavo Chacin and Davis Romero) who are on the 60-day disabled list.
