Blue Jays Blue Jays claim SS Ray Olmedo off waivers

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays claimed shortstop Ray Olmedo off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on Friday and added him to their 40-man roster. To make room on the roster for Olmedo, Toronto designated infielder Ryan Roberts for assigment. Olmedo spent most of last season with the Triple-A Louisville Bats in the Reds' farm system. In 100 games with the Bats, the switch-hitter posted a .282 average with three home runs and 29 RBIs.

We now have 3 very similar players in Olmedo, McDonald and Clayton. One of them most likely will be moved, rumours are that Cleveland is interested in bringing back Johnny Mac.

If memory serves me correctly, Olmeda is a nice guy to come off the bench to give someone a day off here and there, and play some good defense in late inning situations.

I hated the Clayton signing and now I just hate more

Lets not forget JP picked up Jason Smith (anbother SS/2B) in the Rule 5 Draft,

I loved Royce Clayton in his younger days when he was in SF!!! Even St. Louis!! As a Brewer he sucked! Not a fan any more of his either! Olmedo isnot an everyday player, at least not as of yet! But on the positive side, bat your SS in the 9 hole and just play good defense, and with the top of your line-up loaded you will be ok! Anything offensively from your SS is an added bonus!

Rotoworld thinks that with a good Spring he can emerge as the starting SS.

I don't think Smith is considered an option at SS.

Blue Jays sent infielder Ray Olmedo outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Olmedo made it all the way to the Blue Jays on waivers from the Reds last week, so they had to figure there was a good chance of getting him through now. He'll still be in camp as a non-roster player, and he should get a long look
