MIAMI (AP) -- The Toronto Blue Jays recalled right-hander Josh Towers on Sunday and optioned reliever Vinnie Chulk to Triple-A Syracuse.
Towers is scheduled to start Tuesday in the series opener at Atlanta, with left-hander Ted Lilly pushed back a day to Wednesday. Right-hander Ty Taubenheim will go to the bullpen.
"Ted's shoulder was bothering him and he needed an extra day," manager John Gibbons said following Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Florida Marlins.
Towers began the season with the Toronto before being sent down to Syracuse on May 24. He was 1-8 with a 9.00 ERA with Toronto and 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA with the SkyChiefs.
A.J. Burnett (0-1, 6.30 ERA) is scheduled to start Thursday against the Braves. The right-hander was placed on the disabled list April 22 with an elbow injury.
Chulk was 1-0 with a 5.95 ERA in 17 games.
