With the points system it gives each GM an idea of what they need to do to improve their pick. With the lottery system, a team could lose the 1st pick and end up with the 10th pick from no fault of their own. I like the idea of the points system as long as it gives motivation for GMs to particpate more and make the league more enjoyable than it already is. We have a great group of GMs here so I think we can make a system like this work.
In the NBA draft how often hass the team without the most chances win the lottery? I know last year was once. And then how often has a team that had the most chances been lower than 5th in results? Ill try and see what I can find.

Then what is the point of it? At least for our purposes I think a straight point system with a buffer is the best way to go. Our goal is to increase participation, and I think that goal is better achieved by laying out a plan so that everybody knows what they need to do to move up. I'm working on a plan now and I'm trying to incorporate everybody's ideas as much as I can... except the lottery idea.

You know the answer to that.

Points will only be given to posts in certain threads.

I just want to add my two cents, too.

I agree with most others that I'm all for a point system, but I really don't think that letting it affect the draft is a good idea. I understand that Crazy wants to at least try it out, but I'm really afraid it might hurt the league beyond repair. To give the team points in advance based on their record to make sure that teams cannot move from last to first wouldn't really help, because it undermines the original purpose of increasing the activity and stop the tanking in.

In my opinion, the point system should be used for smaller things like allowing a GM to create a player with his name or to give Nicknames to his players and maybe even increase the team's fan interest or loyality in small propotions. The All-Star game can also be awared to the team with the most points.

The tanking is a real problem (I expected to have a close race in the AL Central last season, but suddenly I went on a winning streak and won the division in a landslide, maybe because of tanking?) Of course, tanking occures because of the "reduced complexity" of the league, especially the disablement of the waivers rule. It allows GM to move their stars to AAA without risking losing them (I don't know how many GMs really use this tactic, though).
There isn't a majority for waivers, I guess, but maybe we can implement a rule that if there is a player in AAA who's ML counterpart is clearly worse, the GM gets a warning and the player gets released if the GM doesn't promote him soon. Same for the DL.

You are right that it won't deter tanking completely. I do think it will help though.

Fishercat created this system, and I made some adjustmentsin areas that I felt were important. I really like this this points system and I think it will make the league stronger. It is set up in a way that does give an advantage to the bad teams, but those teams do have to participate in the league in order to keep their advantage. It won't eliminate tanking, but I think it will make it less of an issue. The way the system works now, if you want the 1st pick in the draft, you just have to play worse than any other team. It's almost like a battle for last place. With this system, you aren't guaranteed the 1st pick in the draft if you beat the other teams at being bad. It's sending a message that there are other ways to get a good pick in the draft without having to lose the most games.

It is complex, but I think it is a good system.

Crazy, if you're up to keeping track of all of this, then it could be a great thing.

It won't be easy, but I'm willing to give it a shot to improve the league.
