because many players use that as a stepping stone to the pros not caring about academics...and yes, partly because those leagues don't have minor leagues like hockey and baseball.

If they don't care about the academics then they shouldn't be wasting the scholarship that could otherwise be spent on someone who does care about the academics.

the schools that do that get a lot of revenue from those sports programs so they get the players in for the TV contract, sponsors, etc, etc...they use the kids, the kids use them. That's how it works at the big schools. And I'm really referring to the ones that are trying to go pro. The ones that aren't don't really fall into that category really...though there are plenty of really great college players that still do whether they go pro or not.

If you want to say the academics is a waste of time for them (Which I've never fully disagreed with), then whatever. But, going off that premise, the only logical conclusion is that we don't give athletes scholarships just because they can play a game well.

Instead, hire them out of high school to play for your college....and that's all they do while earning a paycheck to do it.

I realize that's something that will never happen, but neither is giving them a paycheck to waste a scholarship and play the game anyways.

no, I was just stating why the schools give those guys the scholarships (sometimes with "gifts")...so they'll go to their school and help their program bring in money from TV, sponsors, donors, etc.
