Now, Doug Weight may be a future Hall of Famer, but there's nothing Weight can do on the ice now that McDonald doesn't, and McDonald is 6 years younger.
Now, Doug Weight may be a future Hall of Famer, but there's nothing Weight can do on the ice now that McDonald doesn't, and McDonald is 6 years younger.
One reason and one reason only this trade was made
To bring back Scott Niedermayer to the lineup, the Ducks had to shed 880,000 from the payroll for next season (tagging rule)
McDonald is signed for 3.33 million while Weight is an UFA for next season, which made room in payroll to bring back Scotty.
On the trade itself, the Ducks got totally screwed over and with an aging Doug Weight who can barely score goals anymore, he barely qualifies as a 2nd line centre now. (29 games, 4 goals, 7 assists, only had 1 goal before this week started)
in McDonald the blues gain a centre with a lot speed and playmaking ability who signed for a good price will just male the team even better.
Niedermayer has said (or believed to have said) that he will retire at the end of the season and his cap hit of 6.7 million for next season will be off the books which will help to re-sign young winger Corey Perry to an extension, who will likely sign around 5 million per on a 4-6 year contract.

Well, I knew it was about freeing up cap space for Niedermayer. But if the Ducks were truly concerned about it from the get-go, they should have thought twice before giving Todd Bertuzzi an $8 million contract.
well its Brian Burke, he's an ass-hole from top to bottom, while a great guy to have, he over does and it costs him in the end.
Bertuzzi was a huge mistake to just give a big contract to for what he did in the last 2 seasons of his career, especially with that back injury. Should have been a 1 year contract with bonus money, but Burke put his friendship 1st and it will cost him.
He said he had 20 GM willing to help him out and this is the best he can do? some friends hey Burke, and who's putting their team in the sewer now
signed, one happy Oiler fan

This is a fantastic deal for the Blues. I hope they throw Tkachuk to the second line and go Kariya-McDonald-Boyes. McDonald's a great playmaker but he can't do a whole lot without a fast goal-scorer, and hey, look at that - Kariya & Boyes, two fast goal scorers.
Big upgrade from playing with Todd Bertuzzi and Todd Marchant.
Speaking of the Oilers and Doug Weight, the Oilers' only remaining player from the blockbuster Doug Weight to St. Louis trade several years ago is Marty Reasoner?
Not quite true
the other player Jochen Hecht (who's in Buffalo now) was traded for two 2nd round picks and they turned out to be Centre Jarret Stoll and Goalie Jeff Deslauriers who's finally turning his career around in the AHL.
Plus Weight held the Oilers at basically gun-point stating to other teams he only has interest signing with St Louis and Detroit so he tied up Kevin Lowe who just took over the GM duties the year before. Weight was traded 1 year before his UFA status begun, Weight was going to leave if he stayed in Edmonton.

I knew the Oilers gave up Hecht after one season, but I didn't know they got Stoll for him. They also got some minor leaguer named Jan Horocek, however that's spelled. Still, Reasoner is the only remaining player from that trade.
Horocek was just let go or traded away in another deal I can't remember, never worked out in when he came to North America.
