    Nationals Hurricane Katrina thread

If a Cat 4 or 5 hit the city from the current trajectory, and assuming everyone in the city was evacuated who could evacuate- there would still be an estimated 25,000 to 80,000 deaths inside the City of New Orleans. Two thirds of the city would be completely destroyed. The immediate damage would be $100-$250 billion dollars. It would take nine weeks just to drain the city, unless they decided to destroy the levees to let the water out.

Around ten percent of the nation's petroleum supply would be disrupted.

The Red Cross no longer pre-places personell inside the city of New Orleans during hurricanes. They believe the risk to them is too great. The Weather Channel isn't even sending in Jim Cantore.

The New Orleans paper has a series of articles about this: http://www.nola.com/hurricane/?/washingaway/ You don't have to register, but you do have to answer the questions.

they're sayin its gunna reach cat-5 status before it reaches land again.

This is a VERY... and I repeat VERY...serious situation.

Jim Cantore on The Weather Channel actually seemed scared, and he usually tries to remain calm. This could be very tragic and costly and it looks like it might still be a big rain-maker and decent wind producer by the time it hits the Midwest(around the KY and OH areas. So all my fellow Reds fans from the area...watch out!)

Prayers to all who will be affected.

New Orleans is done if it hits there, it is pretty much at sea level. People are already evacuating there, which means traffic sucks around here in Baton Rouge. Classes already got cancelled for Monday. Hurricane parties tomorrow night! We don't run from hurricanes here in Louisiana, we drink them.

MarinersFan, have fun with the party, but please stay safe. This is extremely dangerous. This could be catastrophic.

Baton Rouge should be fine, I've got family in NO that are evacuating and going to Dallas (which is 8 freaking hours away) so if I have to I can head that way.

The Hurricane force winds are expected to extend pretty far inland. The size of the winds around the eye of the storm are expanding as we speak.

if people didnt evacuate, that would be the least one would expect from that size of a hurricane hitting New Orleans. NO has been incredibly lucky over the years to avoid the hurricanes, but that luck may have run out. who knows, though, hurricanes have lost steam before hand (though even a class 2 hurricane would devestate New Orleans)
