Coarsely ground hominy (corn with the hull and germ removed). In the Southern United States, it is commonly boiled and served for breakfast or as a dinner side dish.

Personally, I've always called them "poor man's instant potatoes", but obviously they aren't potatoes (similar texture to a box of instant spuds mixed with Cream of Wheat though if you can guess wtf that would feel like in yer mouth ).

European women don't eat grits but they have follicle issues.

Grits are not very popular in Texas...at least around the Gulf Coast. People in Dullass may have issues with this but they are too busy trying to get us to remember those five rings as if it were recent history.

As far as the teen and the dog...I am sorry for the family (and the others I may offend) but it is just a dog. He raped someone's daughter, too...twice. The story should have focused on that and included the dog for effect IMHO.
I have a pair of bolt cutters that could clear up his rape tendencies in a hurry.
