The major drawback of NBC's highest-rated programming this year -- the Beijing Summer Olympics -- is that there appeared to be little-to-no chance of repeating it, analysts observed at the time. But they apparently did not take into account the opening ceremony which set audience records when it aired from Beijing in August. On Thursday NBC announced that it will air an edited version of the ceremoy ("TV Event of the Year") as a two-hour special beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, hosted by Bob Costas and Matt Lauer. The original telecast was directed by famed Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou. The special will also include the Games' "greatest moments," including, of course, the performance of Michael Phelps in the swimming competition.

Surprised that NBC isn't airing a Michael Phelphs montage, since they've been sucking his **** all summer long.

I'd sooner watch that than the freaking opening ceremonies.

Don't knock it until you've seen it. That was top notch choreography. I don't care for Zhang Yimou's films though.

I just don't get the point of a long drawn out opening ceremonies. To me, its just representatives of way too many minuscule countries that i've never heard of walking around a circle, followed by thousands more people.

The opening ceremony was more than just the parade of countries, you know.

I know, but I always felt like that took up a disproportionate amount of the time. By the time I got through with that I had lost all interest.

Also, anything short of some James Bond physics defying special effects show that the Brits will put out in 2012 will be lame compared to Beijing.

Shape shifting double decker buses? Lame.

You could pay me...I'm low on money. But I wouldn't be happy about it.

Yea, after thinking about it, you could pay me too. But it would have to be a decent amount.

I'd probably do it for anything over 30 or 40 bucks....but I would have on a really mad face.
