Do you still need to sign up for a phone contract the moment you buy it? Ideally, I'd want to get an iphone just to use it as an ipod and mobile internet browser, because I don't really need a telephone.

I wish you could trade the old one in and get the new one for a discount.
Too much for a phone.

I read that the iPhone can connect via "GSM" or "EDGE" networks as well, while the Touch can only connect to the internet via regular wi-fi.
I'm not sure what this means.
Good thing I didn't buy an Iphone and went with the blackjack II, but now since it dropped to 199, I might look into it.
Well currently the iPhone can use the edge network as well as wi-fi. However, since the iPod Touch doesn't have the phone capability, it can only use wi-fi. I am sure the new one will be the same.
what's the difference?

The iPod touch can only connect to the internet via wi-fi, while the iPhone can connect through wi-fi and then a bunch more networks like you said. Wi-fi can be really hard to come by, unless you're in a residential/business area and you can tap into their networks. The phone should, in theory, work anywhere.
Got it today, enjoying it so far, the AP store pretty cool.
See Edge and GSM and all that crap. That's the network the phone is on. It's basically your phone signal. When you have an iPhone, if you're not near WiFi you can use the networks. It's basically like using dial up (56k), to use the internet. It's not super fast, but it's better then not having anything.
WiFi is wireless internet. If you're at a place that has WiFi, you can connect to it and only then use the internet. Just think about all the people using the internet at Starbucks, Borders, ect. Those places have WiFi. Lots of residential areas usually have WiFi, but those netwoks tend to be protected, where you'll need a password.
If you live in a major city, coming across WiFi shouldn't be a hard thing. But regardless you won't always have the internet at the tip of your fingers. Though all the other cool features will still be there.
