Question Blackburn Liner: Have you ever had a similar sports experience?

The Official Site of Major League Baseball: Multimedia: Video Playback Page

    Makes me shudder every time.

I've had 3 liners hit back at me while I was pitching.

The first one nailed me right in the head, and all I got was a huge lump and some seams.

The second one hit my brim and then my jaw, gave me the recurring TMJ problem I have.

The third one was this year, hit right at my temple, but I got my glove up just in time.

The most interesting fact about these: All three times I threw the batter out at first, and struck out the next batter.

Have you had something like this, like a bad spike, a shot to the knee in football, whatever happens in basketball, or were you dropped as a flier?

    Post it.

I've had go one right over my head, and one that I caught. Never been hit though. (crosses fingers)

Re: Blackburn Liner: Have you ever had a similar sports experience?

One time when I was playing short I was going to field a ground ball and it took an awful bounce and it bounced up and nailed me right in the nose. I fell right over, the ump told me that it looked like a fountain of blood coming out of my nose and blood was everywhere. All up and down my jersey was blood and when I stood up there was just a puddle of blood where I was laying at. I did however, get back up and keep playing and then my next AB I got hit in the arm by the same kid that hit the ground ball, haha. I went up to the hospital afterwards and they said they couldn't tell if it was broken without X-rays but I was going to spend all that money on X-rays when I thought (at the time) it wasn't broken. I do now, think it was broken because it kind of looks crooked when you look at it. I also got quite the black eye from it.

Another time (this year in fact) while I was at third I went to get another ground ball and yet again it took a nasty hop but this time it didn't hit my nose. It hit my, well, I guess you could say, junk. I yet again fell straight to the ground. This one was a little bit more painful and so I had to come off and I ended up vomiting in the dugout. It was quite embarrassing, we were playing our cross town rival so there were more people than usual there. Also, when I was pitching I've had one come right back at my head but fortunately I snagged it. I've had a few thing happen in my other two sports but nothing to serious.

Well, maybe they didn't take nasty hops, maybe I'm just an awful infielder.

Well, I don't play much serious sports, mainly pickup games. In one game, I was pitching to my friend who....lets just say hits like Adam Dunn (lots of power, strikes out a lot). He hit one back at me, that cracked one of my ribs. That sucked. Then, a few months later, he hit another one at my head, that I just barely avoided. They were both quite scary, and both resulted in my losing all semblance of control on the mound, because I just couldn't focus.

I've also had a couple bad injuries in football. I don't like to brag, but when it comes to my friends and our pickup games, even though I'm not that big, I'm an amazing receiver. I have speed, and great hands. But, I tend to be carefree about going over the middle, and have gotten many spears resulting in a few bruised ribs. One time, however, I got flipped...I landed straight up on my head, and sprained my neck. It was only a minor sprain, but it was scary as hell. My friends thought I was gonna be paralyzed.

Cracked ribs? I got that from getting hit by a pitch...wanna hear the best part? It was my last year of little league, and I got hit 3 times the whole season...twice in the same game...back to back at bats.

    That sucked also.

    The receiver stuff is brutal...

I tried pitching in HS, but didn't have the arm and stuff the only pitch that I threw for strikes consistently was the circle change that I learned, it was just an experience to see what I could do.

When I was in 5th or 6th grade we were playing "baseball" with a tennis ball in our apts because we weren't allowed to use a real baseball, I was playing catcher, my friend hit a liner at the pitcher, it hit him in the neck. He had a pretty good bruise.

Today in the 3rd inning of our game, our SS was taking a routine grounder, but at the last second it a weird bounce and hit him on his lip, he was bleeding and his tooth pushed up. He was spitting blood everywhere, thats where the game downhill for us, we kept it close.

While pitching I never took any liners back at me, but while playing second I've taken numerous ground balls to the cup. Our infield dirt was aweful. While also playing second, when people attempted to steal, I'd always block the bag with my leg. Probably not the smartest idea I've ever had, but it worked most of the time. I would get spiked so bad though, usually right down near my ankle.

I have never gotten hit in the face with the ball, but I was pitching in a summer softball league and if you can imaging the pitching circle is much closer to the batter's box than in baseball. The girl hit a hard line drive and hit me in the chest. I was actually lucky that I just had internal bleeding a huge bruise and NO broken ribs.

Re: Blackburn Liner: Have you ever had a similar sports experience?

I threw BP in high school because throwing strengthens your arm (note to MLB pitchers) and had a liner come back and hit me square in the chest. Loudest thump I think I have ever heard.

Also in high school, I was playing CF and had a beat on a ball that was crushed and looking back I should have known it was a no doubt homerun. I was running it down and crashed into the fence running full speed. I broke the top bar of the fence with my neck and blacked out for an inning. People said they were talking to me and I never knew it. I even had a RBI single I forgot about.

In college I played RF because of my arm. We basically had three CFer playing the OF. Ball was hit into shallow right center and me and the CF both dove for the ball head first and slammed our heads together. I immediately got up and got the ball to throw the guy out at third. The CFer was unconcious and had to go the the hospital with a cracked jaw and concussion. I made the play of the game but I have never been so worried in all my life. I thought I broke the dude's neck.

Haha, dude, I was wearing one. If you have gotten hit there before though you know that it doesn't take away that much of the pain.

Re: Blackburn Liner: Have you ever had a similar sports experience?

In my freshman year of highschool I was lucky enough to play on the varsity baseball team. We were playing our cross-town rivals and I had some friends (and enemies) who were on the team. I was playing catcher at it was late in the game and the score was tied. They had their leadoff hitter at third, and he had a reputation for being a real hard-nosed kinda guy. The batter hit a slow roller to short and the guy threw the ball home for me to tag the guy out. Now lemme put this in perspective - I was a freshman and was 5' and was listed at just under 100 lbs. And here comes this huge senior who was probably 5'10" and maybe double my weight. He looked like a steam engine heading towards me. He completely barreled my over. I was squashed. The collision tore my left ACL, fractured my right shoulder, and left me with severe whiplash. I had to be escorted off the field on a stretcher by EMTs. The best part of the story was that the guy was out. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

Ouch. You should just be proud that you hung in there and got the out.. That is such a great thing. Something you will remember for the rest of your life. If it was me seeing that train steaming down the third base line , I would have stepped aside and said Hell I rather live than die.
