Gibson, 50, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving at 2:36 a.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The actor-director was detained while driving along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the sheriff's department. Gibson was booked and later released from custody.

"Right now, it's an ongoing investigation," Whitmore told E! News.

Gibson's bail was set at $5,000, online records show.

"We don't have any information on [the arrest], but are checking into it," said Alan Nierob, Gibson's publicist

Not really. Being spiritual does NOT make one perfect and obviously we all make mistakes. This is nothing more than a mistake made by a human being. There are hundreds/thousands of DWI's handed out every day. Mel's is no greater than anyone elses (thankfully no one was hurt)

Jews Upset Over Mel Gibson's Remarks To Officer

LOS ANGELES -- Jewish groups are fuming over what Mel Gibson admits were "despicable" remarks when he was arrested Friday in California for alleged drunken driving.

A police report quoted by entertainment Web site TMZ.com said Gibson uttered a "barrage" of anti-Semitic remarks.

TMZ.com said the arrest report accuses Gibson of saying "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking the arresting officer "Are you a Jew?"

The Los Angeles Times said it has independently verified the report's authenticity.

Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said, "If that's what he said, even under intoxication, it clearly shows that Mel Gibson has a problem with Jews."

The head of the Anti-Defamation League, which complained that Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ" had anti-Semitic overtones, calls Gibson's apology for Friday's incident "insufficient."

Gibson is blaming his bad behavior on being drunk. Gibson released a statement Saturday that said, "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department initially never said anything about Gibson spewing expletives and being belligerent. Then, TMZ got ahold of the deputy's handwritten report that included four pages about Gibson using the F-word over and over, screaming about Jews, and saying he owns Malibu.

Gibson said he's battled alcoholism all his adult life and he profoundly regrets his "horrific relapse." He said he's taking "necessary steps" to return to health. It's unclear if that means he's going into rehab.

In 2004, Gibson defended himself against accusations of anti-Semitism after some Jewish leaders said "Passion" cast Jews as the killers of Christ.

"To be anti-Semitic is a sin," Gibson, a Catholic, told ABC's Diane Sawyer. "It's been condemned by one Papal Council after another. To be anti-Semitic is to be un-Christian, and I'm not."

The anti-Semitic controversy swirling around Gibson two years ago was partly due to a remark his father, Hutton Gibson, had made that the Holocaust was mostly "fiction." The younger Gibson has said that he will not speak against his father.

Will It Affect Him In Hollywood?

Will Mel Gibson's alleged anti-Semitic barage hurt him in Hollywood? How about at the box office?

Drunken or not, the words came from somewhere and one media consultant said, "It's a nuclear disaster for him."

Michael Levine, who has represented Michael Jackson and Charlton Heston, among others, said he doesn't "see how he can restore himself."

One studio executive who wants to stay anonymous said people have short memories, including filmmakers who might want to profit from Gibson's star power.

And, the president of the box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations said movie-goers could overlook a lot if Gibson's films are worth seeing.

Mel Gibson's next movie is "Apocalypto," about the decline of the Mayan empire. It's in the ancient Mayan language and is expected in theaters Dec. 8. Many wonder if after this, Gibson will do publicity for the film.

after all of the hateful jews dumped on him after The Passion came out, perhaps he's developed a dislike or bitterness of some kind. can't fault a guy for that, having an entire race of people ticked off at him for making a historical movie in which they were completely at fault for the murder / execution of an innocent man. the truth hurts. regardless of Jesus being the son of God or not, it's historical fact that they put him to death. not just the bible but latin documents speak of the event.

this is still nothing more than a harmless drunken statement made by a guy who clearly wasn't in the right frame of mind. had he said something about all of the irish in chicago, no one would care.

Not exactly. In Gibson's case, alcohol may have served as a truth serum. Those words had to come from somewhere in his mind. However, he could have been up front about his prejudice. Then anyone who still holds hard feelings against him would be taking the matter much too seriously.
