ARLINGTON -- The Rangers got the player they wanted when they selected right-handed pitcher Blake Beavan from Irving High School with the 17th overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft on Thursday.

Beavan finished the regular season with a record of 8-2 with a 0.21 ERA with 124 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched. He threw a one-hitter in his first playoff start.

He is 6-foot-7 and throws in the upper 90's. He played for the USA Junior National Team in Cuba last year and threw a shutout against the host Cuban team.
He has a college scholarship waiting for him at the University of Oklahoma and is advised by Randy and Alan Hendricks, longtime agents for Roger Clemens and other well-known Texas pitchers.
The 2nd coming of Nolan Ryan or Roger Clemens would be nice.
