Rangers Claim Pair of Pitchers off Waivers

Texas added Francisco Cruceta from the Mariners and Mike Wood from the Royals.

The 25 year old Cruceta made 1 start and 3 relief appearances for the Mariners in '06 posting an ERA of 10.80. He was 13-9 with a 4.38 ERA and a PCL high 185 K's in the minor leagues though.

Twenty-six year old Wood went 3-3 with a 5.71 ERA in 23 appearances, 7 of them starts for the Royals. He also had a 2 month stint on the DL in '06 with inflamation in his back.

That's definately true in the Rangers case.

Cruceta looks like he has some potential so hopefully he can turn into something. Even a quality emergency start would be better than nothing. lol

I don't know much about Cruceta, but Mike Wood has decent stuff. With a solid defense behind him, and a bit more coaching, he should be OK. Not likely to contend for a Cy Young award, but he should be a decent major league pitcher.

Wood reminds me a lot of some of the Oakland A's former rookies, similar to a Lidle(when he was rated high), or a Blanton.

Except for the fact that Blanton has won 28 games in his first 2 seasons...something Wood and Lidle didn't even come close to. Blanton a little better than both of them.
