ARLINGTON -- Michael Young hit a milestone with unprecedented speed on Tuesday, recording his 1,000th hit, a single to center field, off Toronto pitcher Roy Halladay in the fifth inning.
"I would have loved for it to be in a winning game," said the self-effacing Young. "I was just lucky to get that one to bleed in tonight."
He reached the 1,000-hit plateau in just 827 games, the fastest in club history. Third baseman Buddy Bell got his 1,000th in 869 games during the 1984 season.
Young, the American League batting champion in 2005, is the 10th fastest active Major Leaguer to get 1,000 hits, tying the Angels' Vladimir Guerrero.
"It means a lot," said Young. "If you rack up hits, it means you're staying healthy and being consistent. Health is always my biggest priority because that means my teammates can rely on me to be on the field and helping to contribute. It's been a good start, and hopefully it's just the start of things."
Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki was the fastest active player to 1,000 (696 games).
