Rays pitching coach Mike Butcher said the whole idea about getting Colome to pitch from a different spot on the rubber was to get him to pitch inside more.
"When he pitches inside, he can dominate a game with the stuff he has," Butcher said. "He's starting to believe in how good he can be. ... He keeps throwing like that, it's exciting to see that kind of stuff."
Colome was excited about his performance.
"Now I pitch a lot different," Colome said. "Go inside, I throw a fastball inside, throw a breaking ball outside, the hitter doesn't move."
Butcher picked up on Colome's excitement as well.
"He's very excited," Butcher said. "It's exciting when you see results happen right away. It's positive reinforcement, and he got to see some results happen. [Colome] pitched yesterday, pitched again today. It's nice."
Colome wants to be the closer.
"All of Spring Training, I've been thinking about how I want to close," Colome said. "That's why I work hard every day, I want the job. ... If [Maddon] gives it to me, I'll take it. But I'll do whatever he wants."
Colome's always had nice stuff, but perhaps he has a shot at turning that stuff into a solid year. I'm having trouble believing that he didn't pitch inside before, but it seems he has some vigor, and that's a good thing. If no one actually shows up as the main closer, there could be the...DUNDUNDUN...closer by committee.
