Rays Rays lock up Matt Moore

Rays Lock Up Matt Moore: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Wow! 17 days of big league service and you get paid! I love it! Another example of a small market team securing deals that will save them money in the long run, much like the Longoria deal. Andrew Friedman is a really, really good GM.

It saves them money assuming he doesn't prove to be a bust, a risk big markets don't need to take with unproven talent.

Big markets need to be taking lessons from Friedman. Even if he proves to be a bust, it's not going to hurt the Rays financially.

I'd rather not see a trend where 17 days of service is all you need to command a multi million dollar extension. You think that precedent is a good thing for small market teams?

Re: Rays lock up Matt Moore

Matt Moore is a special player and one of the best arms to come through the Rays system which is saying a lot! 17 days, 117 days, it all depends on the player. More and more small market teams are making these deals and it's smart because it saves them money. The precedent has already been set.

Rays signed LHP Matt Moore to a five-year, $14 million contract with club options for 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The deal carries a maximum value of approximately $39.75 million. It's a risk to give a pitcher with just 9 1/3 career innings that much money, but if Moore pitches like everyone feels he will, the deal should be a very favorable one in the long run for the Rays. Though executive VP of baseball operations Andrew Friedman says this doesn't necessarily mean Moore is locked into a rotation spot for 2012, we would expect room to be cleared for him by a trade of either Wade Davis or Jeff Niemann sometime before spring training.

You know who else was a "special player" and one of the best to come though his teams system? Mark Prior.

There's "special" players busting every year.

Mark Prior had mechanical flaws, Moore does not. Special players do bust and if Moore does, it won't hurt the Rays financially. This is low risk, all reward.
