I was looking at some of the top players in the draft this year, and it doesn't look like there is a clear #1 pick. So the question is who will the Rays pick? Lets look at a few of the possibilities.
Brian Matusz LHP This is probably the guy that I pick, but that is only because I will almost always take a good starting pitcher over any position player. He can hit 93 or 94mph, and has good command of 4 pitches.
Buster Posey C A 21 year old college catcher that can hit, but he doesn't have a lot of power. He was originally a SS, so he is still learning the position. He has above average speed for a catcher, but that doesn't say much.
Tim Beckham SS An 18 year old high school shortstop. It sounds like he is still pretty raw, but has tons of potential offensively and defensively. Shortstop is a great position to draft, but I'd only pick Beckham if I'm looking for a guy that would help me several years in the future.
Pedro Alvarez 3B A 21 year old Third-Baseman. This is the guy that I think the Rays should pick, but they already have Longoria at 3B. Alvarez has a lot of talent and is a lot closer to being ready for the bigs than the other four players.
Well... I do like Alvarez, but I have to go with the pitcher. I think Matusz should be the top pick in the draft, but we'll see what happens.
