The Cardinals are having internal discussions about Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Jeff Weaver, who was designated for assignment Friday and must either be traded or released by the All-Star break.
Weaver apparently has attracted enough interest that the Angels insist they will not release him, leaving the Cardinals to compete with a number of clubs, including the Dodgers, for the former 14-game winner. The extended loss of Mark Mulder to shoulder irritation may fuel the club's pursuit, according to a club source.
The Cardinals were initially hopeful Mulder would return shortly after the All-Star break. However, a weekend exam suggested it's more likely Mulder will be activated no sooner than mid-August.
