Now now, let's not pretend that at least some Oakland fans weren't begging for Zito to be traded over Hudson and Mulder. I remember last year that ADH wanted Zito traded over Mulder/Hudson and got pissed at his lack of performance quite often.
He's too inconsistant, his lack of a dominating fastball will catch up to him eventually, you have to be very concerned about his mental ability. All three of those things were said last year around this time.
ABG called Zito mediocre in the offseason at the time of the Mulder (Beane an idiot as well, but the frustration made sense).
Many other fans (including myself) wondered why Zito wasn't traded instead of Mulder or why Mulder was traded period. I loved the trade for St. Louis at the time (for Mulder), I was wrong there, but pretty much everyone was dumbfounded by the trade and you're the only A's fan from there that I can't find anything downplaying the caliber of Zito. Not necessarily not liking trading Mulder, rather the return which has shown to be quite capable.
Funny thing, reefer got a lot closer than anyone else I've seen
"HAHAHAHA!! They said the same things about the big three that they are right now. They are too young and won't be **** for years. Well guess what, they were better than anyone thought they would be. This trade is a good deal. Sure they might not win 90 games this year (maybe) but they will be good in 2006. They have a possible rotation of Zito, Harden, Haren, Blanton and Meyer. Plus they got a good young bullpen. Street, Garcia, Cruz, Bradford, Rincon and Calero setting up Dotel is gonna be fun to watch. Haren looked good when he got his feet wet having a good September and Calero put up great numbers. They revised the pen which is a great step in the right direction. They have lost two very very good pitchers but got four pitchers, an outfielder and a catcher who had a good year at single A which doesn't mean much. They got good guys with an upside. It just depends on how you look at it. It will be exciting to see that's for sure."
Most fans wanted Zito to be traded too due to a lack of hope.
This only speaks volumes that Beane might know what he is doing.
