Padres Well, Bud Black lost my vote for manager of the year

Mark Reynolds(notes) hit a three-run homer off infielder Josh Wilson(notes) with two outs in the 18th inning, sending the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday in the longest major league game this season.
You've ****ing gotta be kidding me. This is just about the weakest move a manager can make, to send a position player to pitch in a tied ball game. Not a blow out game like the one Mark Grace pitched in, but a tied game. Not exactly the time to throw a bone to the opponent. As Mr. Pitching Guru, you either let one of your relievers go one more inning or be prepared to sacrifice Chris Young. The game doesn't matter only if you won't let it matter.

He already sacrificed Chad Gaudan. It would be kind of silly to burn another starter along with him.

I don't know why he didn't just leave Chad in for the extra inning, though.

No, silly is allowing anybody who's not a pitcher to pitch in an extra inning game. Compared to that, any move that helps you win a game sounds pretty ****ing rational to me.

    I'm not arguing that notion.

We both agree....that he should have left Chad in.

    Not really

I will commend him for having a team that never seems to want to give up, and it's hard to completely fault him when the team is so devoid of talent, but on the other hand he has made some very questionable decisions this year...this being one of them.

It was the 18th inning, he had few if any pitchers left. You could only lose THAT game once, but burning out your staff will hurt for a week or two.

Agreed, and he already burned one of his starters.

I think putting Chris Young in would have been worse than what he did do, but I still think he should have left Chad in the game.

18th inning. If theres anything Ive learned from Duhhsty as Reds manager is that in situations like this you can choose to either punt 1 game or MANY games within a couple decisions.

Just look at whats happened to the starters used by the Reds the last 2 years in extra innings and what followed the relief appearances.

Thats what happens when you use 9 pitchers before Josh Wilson got on the mound. And really was holding his own before the 3 run homer.

Like I said, he should have let one of his relievers go three innings. He's not completely blameless for being forced to use Josh Wilson to pitch. Yes, Wilson got two outs, but inexperience will always show itself on a bad pitch that is taken deep.

Way to roll over after a 1-0 lead through 8 innings against the Rockies. Excuse me if I don't believe that Bud Black's boys never seem to want to give up.
