Seattle must decide on Rule 5 draftees | Mariners.com: News
I really like that the rule 5 guys are impressing this spring and I think Lugo might make the team because he could be that power lefty we haven't had since Rhodes.Corona, a 22-year-old switch-hitter, has played second base, third base and shortstop this spring and is in the running for a backup infield job. His primary competition is Ronny Cedeno, acquired from the Cubs in early February.
Going into Friday afternoon's Cactus League game against the Rockies at Peoria Stadium, Corona was batting .280 and ranked among the team leaders in at-bats (50).
Lugo, who celebrates his 25th birthday on April 10, spent the entire 2008 season with the Twins' Class A team in Ft. Myers, Fla. He had a 2-6 record and 4.04 ERA in 51 relief appearances, but his 76 strikeouts in 69 innings shows off his power arm.
And organizations want many left-handed pitchers in their system.
"Lugo has shown us some effectiveness with a delivery that may be a little unorthodox, which gives you a change of pace," Wakamatsu said.
