SEATTLE (TICKER) -- The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Eduardo Perez from the Cleveland Indians on Friday.
The Indians received minor league infielder Asdrubal Cabrera in the deal.
Perez is expected to join the Mariners for Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies.
Perez, 36, hit .303 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in 37 games with the Indians this season.
"Eduardo is a veteran, proven righthanded bat that allows us to be stronger against lefthanded pitching," Mariners executive vice president and general manager Bill Bavasi said. "We think adding him to our big league club strengthens a spot that we want to be stronger in as we look for the second half of the season."
Since the start of the 2002 season, Perez has hit .294 with 33 homers against lefthanded pitching.
In his 13th major league season, Perez is a career .250 hitter with 78 home runs and 283 RBI.
Cabrera, 20, has spent the entire season at Triple-A Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League where he hit .236 with three homers and 22 RBI in 60 games. He did not make an error in his first 36 games and ranks first among PCL shortstops with a .986 fielding percentage.
