Lincecum and Johnson will have their starts skipped. Lincecum has the flu and Johnson has a sore bicep.

Giants optioned 3B Conor Gillaspie, LHP Jesse English and RHP Henry Sosa to minor league camp; reassigned C Eli Whiteside, INF/OF Matt Downs and INF Jake Wald to minor league camp. No one will be missed. Gillaspie and Sosa have plenty to get better in the minors.

    Re: 2009 Spring Training News

The regulars are really playing poorly relying on the minor leaguers to generate the offense late and win these ballgames. Those minor leagues are hitting off other minor leaguers.

Sandoval will miss a few games after being struck in the face by a groundball.

Andres Torres is really turning heads this spring. Only problem is he is 31 years old. Torres is hitting .429 with four stolen bases and has played great defense. He could be a candidate for our 5th OFer.

Winn's bat woke up today going 2-3 raising his average to .186.

Valdez threw a perfect inning today striking out one. Valdez has been hurt a lot so he will have to keep this up to make his way into the pen.

Cain continues to struggle giving up four earned in 5 2/3 IP, the longest outing of any Giants starter. He struck out two but walked three. Cain has got to start maintaining some control at this point in his career.

Ishikawa went 3-3 yesterday with two homers. He now has five on the spring. He raised his spring average to .314.

Posey hit his second homerun off Russ Springer so it was nice to see him hit one off a ML pitcher.

Randy Johnson went three innings giving up two runs in his first start since having soreness in his bicep. He gave up three hits, one being a homerun.

Lincecum went six innings today giving up three runs. He came in after Johnson so he didn't really start the game which could have thrown him off. He only struck out one batter.

Pablo Sandoval was the only regular to do anything in today's game going 3-4 hitting his 3rd HR. Sandoval is now hitting .442 this spring.

Giants optioned 3B Ryan Rohlinger, RHP Billy Sadler, RHP Waldis Joaquin and SS Brian Bocock to Triple-A Fresno; reassigned 1B Scott McClain to minor league camp. Bocock looked a lot better this spring than he did last year when he was forced into the Opening Day lineup. McClain is the old man but my only hope is that he can help Guzman at first base. Sadler has sucked, Joaquin needs work but will definitely be up at some point and Rohlinger is a couple of years away.

Burriss went 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBI while Frandsen went 1-4. Burriss also made his third error, this one at SS. Defense should determine the outcome of who wins the job so hopefully Frandsen wins.

I thought Frandsen and Burriss are competing for the 2b job?

They are. That should have read shortstop but they are still competing for the second base job. I will change it. See, I need you to keep me in line

Zito pitched five innings tonight and struck out seven while giving up seven hits and three runs. One of the runs scored on a play that Sandoval should have gloved but tried bare handing it and failed. Zito looked sharp establishing his fastball and the wind really helped his curve. Solid outing for Zito.

Lewis went 2-2 with a walk and a RBI. Rowand went 1-1 with a good looking double and two walks. He really worked the counts to get those walks. Ishikawa had a RBI single against a lefty so it looks like a platoon is less and less likely. Sandoval went 2-4 with two, 2 out RBI hits. Giants beat the Cubs 5-3.

    Re: 2009 Spring Training News

Giants acquired catcher Ronny Paulino from the Phillies for LHP Jack Taschner.
Paulino qualifies as an upgrade from Steve Holm, but he's hardly an ideal fit for the Giants. Both he and Bengie Molina have been far much better against lefties than righties over the course of their career. Paulino's splits are about as extreme as they come, as he's hit .355/.417/.498 in 259 career at-bats against lefties and .252/.301/.343 versus righties. Odds are that Paulino will be the backup on Opening Day, though we wouldn't call it a given just yet. Paulino only makes the minimum, so there's no financial incentive to carry him.

I sure hope it Steve Holm. He calls a great game and knows the pitching staff well. He did a good job last year with a .357 OBP.

    Re: 2009 Spring Training News

Kevin Pucetas got it done with the bat today but could not with his arm. He gave up five runs in 2 1/3 IP. Brandon Medders blew the game in the end as the Padres won 11-10. Merkin Valdez had another scoreless inning so it looks like he will start the year on the Giants roster.

Giants also torched Chirs Young for six runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Renteria had two RBI going 2-2, Ishikawa hit his 6th HR and went 2-5 with 3 RBI, Winn was 2-3, Sandoval 2-2 with a RBI and Lewis was 2-4 with a RBI. Burriss stole two bases and Frandsen came in to play SS. Looks like Burriss will be the Opening Day starter at second.
