Re: The Official Giants Offseason Thread

The Pirates may non-tender Xavier Nady if no team steps up with a trade proposal for the right fielder, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
That would be ridiculous. What else are they going to spend money on? They're not pursuing any free agents, and they don't have that many players due substantial raises. Nady, who hit .278/.330/.476 in 431 at-bats last season, figures to make about $3.5 million in arbitration. The Pirates are believed to have talked to the Padres about him.
Giants should also look into picking up Nady to play first and help in the OF. First base is Nady's secondary position an according to his fielding stats which really don't tell much says he is fairly decent. He hit 20 HRs and 72 RBI in 125 games last year. Nady and Ortmeier would make a good platoon with Nady getting the majority of the playing time. He would be a cheap option at first and would be a better than the fore-mentioned Chris Shelton.

They have already offered it. He will accept it since no one will give him the three year deal he is wanting. Twins might be interested since they need a third baseman and so could the Brewers. I have a feeling we are ****ing stuck with Feliz and I just want to die.

Brewers? Why would the Brewers be interested in him? When they already have Braun? Unless there thinking about changing positions on him since he lacks in defense?

Reports earlier said they were looking at Rolen so I thought they would at least consider Feliz since he is 100x better than Braun on defense.

They can put him in left. Braun, Hall, Hart makes a damn powerful outfield.

Free agent Aaron Rowand indicated that he is holding out for a five-year deal.
The Phillies might be willing to spend the $10 million-$12 million per season it would take to sign him, but they've so far failed to extend an offer beyond three years. The White Sox have also been scared off by Rowand's price, leaving the Dodgers as perhaps his top suitor right now. The Yankees still might be an option, even though they're sending out word that they'll go with Johnny Damon in center field if they trade Melky Cabrera.
This makes Rowand unattractive now. I like Rowand on a four year deal but not so much for the extra year. Since Rowand has come out and said this, I would prefer the Giants offer a two year deal to Jones worth $32 mil. Jones is declining and strikes out a lot but he is a right handed hitter with power. Jones is also a name that people know which the Giants need in these rebuilding years. If the Giants sign Jones, they will need someone to protect him.

We could offer Rowand a 4yr/44ml deal with a team option for a 5th.

The Astros and Giants are among the teams that have expressed interest in Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, sources told SI.com's Jon Heyman.
It's a surprise that Houston is involved. The Orioles have interest in Michael Bourn and Adam Everett, according to Heyman. We imagine the Astros are set on keeping Bourn, as they'd take a huge defensive downgrade by going from Everett to Tejada at shortstop and Bourn to Luke Scott in the outfield.
The Giants don't have a SS to offer but do have plenty of OFers. The Giants need this deal done before Feliz accepts arbitration. Tejada is a huge upgrade over Feliz offensively hitting for average, power and has a good OBP. Tejada would be a perfect #3 hitter for the Giants.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Pirates will not non-tender Xavier Nady if they're unable to trade him.
There had been previous speculation that the Pirates might simply let Nady go if a trade wasn't possible, but that was outlandish given that he's only set to make around $3 million via arbitration.
This changes things but I do think the Giants should call and ask what it would take. Giants need to do something this week in Nashville.

Whats up with the Cain and Lincecum for Miggy Cabrera talks? Anything stemming from that?

Those talks are most likely dead. Sabean said they were asking for too much so I think they moved their attention to Tejada for our third baseman.

The Mariners are intent on trading Richie Sexson at the winter meeting, says FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
The Orioles, Giants, Rays or maybe even the Yankees could try Sexson if the Mariners throw in at least half of the $14 million he's due in 2008. Seattle might then play Ben Broussard at first base. It's assumed Broussard would be non-tendered if there are no takers for Sexson.
If the M's are willing to pay half of Sexson's salary the Giants would be fools not to jump on this. Sexson has only one year left so he's in a contract year. Ortmeier can be his left handed backup. Getting him at $7 mil will make it easy for the Giants to get Jones if they wanted to.

Re: The Official Giants Offseason Thread

Agent Joe Urbon is scheduled to meet with the Giants, as well as the Cubs, regarding Kosuke Fukudome.
Fukudome has always made a lot of sense for the Giants as a replacement for Barry Bonds in the outfield. The Padres and White Sox are also thought to be interested, though the White Sox may take themselves out of the mix after landing Carlos Quentin.
I wouldn't be too terribly upset if we got Fukudome. If we sign him, we have to look for power outside of the OF position. Cabrera, Sexson and Tejada talks would heat up. Something about an OF of Fukudome, Roberts/Davis and Winn/Scheirholtz doesn't scare anyone.
