Sweet. The "Rowand for Linebrink rumor tabled" discussion is the second thread started by me that has been closed in the Padres forum. The first one was the "Padres interested in Barry Bonds*?" thread. I'm on a roll.

There should be an astarisk attached to your record because you never started that thread, but, instead, made the first post on the subject in the offseason rumors thread.

After I moved the posts to their own thread it listed you as "starting" it due to having the first post.

Terrible move...this will have a major effect on this team next year and maybe for years to come...AJ Smith's ego might be the biggest issues here, and it's too bad that the Spanos clan didn't check him sooner

On the contrary, going off the fact that Marty was going to leave next year no matter what, it's better to get the change now rather than putting it off a year.

That being said, the firing should've been two weeks ago if they were going to do this.

"fact"....there is nothing to suggest that Marty wouldn't have been given a multi-year deal had we gone deep into the playoffs next year...nothing at all.....fact is....he took AJ's jailbirds to a 14-2 record w/ a 1st year starter....fact is no other head coach had ever been blown out after winning 14 games....fact is he's been the best coach we've had in almost a decade....fact is they waited too long to blow him out.....fact is we now have no Head coach, O-Coor or D-Coor.....not to mention the lesser coaches we also lost.....this was a terrible move, and poorly timed....had they just cut ties at season end, we could have just promoted Wade Phillips, who I understand is AJ's guy, not allowed Cam Cameron to leave and moved right along...but now we're taking 10 steps back and screwed 10x's over....this is a terrible hit for us....

There's nothing to suggest he would've gone deep into the playoffs next year. We saw what happend this year, and in 2004.

Fact is, the coordinators he let go played a role in that. I also think it's unfair to label them "AJ's jailbirds" considering only one of those perverbial jailbirds actually saw significant playing time...and he's going to be cut sometime this week.

True, but that doesn't mean we can't get another good one.

They have an O-Coor, they hired Clarence Shelmon. But new coaches like to bring new coordinators anyways, so it might've happend anyways. Especially given all the hype Cam got for a new job. Everyone wanted him.

I agree the timing is terrible, but I understand the move.

I'm glad Wade Phillips didn't get the job, though...he sucks as a head coach.

And what makes you think Cam wouldn't have left? I'm sure he still would've taken the HC job, which means he only would've stayed if WE offered him that job.

This was in reply to your use of the word "fact", and I'd say that this team was in perfect position to go deep next year.....2nd year under Rivers belt, defense getting stronger, WR and 2ndary only real issues needing to be addressed....this team was in great shape.... 14-2 for christs sake.....wtf is wrong with people ??

I guess my point was that we didn't need to take 10 steps back.....keeping Marty would have limited the fallout, even if only for a year, and had we continued to have great success, a deep playoff push is NOT out of the question....and he might have gotten that multi-year deal....then we'd have only taken a very small step backwards in coordinators.....but damn man a whole coaching house cleaning after a 14-2 season..... makes zero sense

You think this team isn't talented enough to go 14-2 under anyone other than Marty?

Do you think Marty would want to stick around with as much as he and AJ didn't get along?

I liked Marty, but if I have to choose between him and AJ i'll take AJ faster than LT gets into the endzone.

Besides, i'd rather they go 10-6 and win in the playoffs than go 16-0 and lose in the playoffs.

I don't think the playoff loss was all on Marty, there's definitely enough blame to go around, but they were obviously unprepared to play that game...and it's the HC's job to prepare the team.

I want both....I see no reason that the GM and Head coach need to have a love affair so long as the lines are clearly drawn....and they were.....and no I don't think this team goes 14-2 next year under whoever we have running the show, even if it's an upgrade.....the rythm has been broken, the momentum has been halted....we're now going to be starting over, just with a better group....a group Marty had primed and ready to go on a run for years....

as far as the players being unprepared......LT said it best....he said to that they were well prepared, and had 20 weeks of preparation and then a few key players didn't do their jobs for which they were well prepared and let the coaches who did a great job preparring them down.....

this is 100% true and I really hope you hear what's being said....

That's all BS.....it's far too easy to blame a coach for a loss, when he's not on the field making critical errors. Too easy and in this case, which is what we're talking about, it's wrongfully tagged. Marty was NOT the issue this post season, and anyone that truly believes he was IMO knows dicksquat about football....
