^ x 1,000,000. I just don't see the Padres looking any better and should be fighting the Dbacks for 4th place. AGon hurts that much!

Wow all this sounds just like it did last year .......
All I've said is that this team so far looks better on paper than it did to start the season last year......THEY STILL HAVE TO PLAY YOU CLOWNS........and this team does look better on paper than it did to start last year.....that's very simple to see.......sorry if you girls don't get that
Last year they had Adrian Gonzalez.
And of course they have to play, that's why they don't give trophies to "paper champions".
But, for the time being on paper they hardly look better when they just traded away their only reliable offensive player for minor league prospects and all their "upgrades" are minor upgrades at best.
I'm not saying the Padres cannot compete this year (although I wouldn't hold my breath). But since you're arguing about "on paper" you couldn't be further from the truth.

Ok....so according to you....
Cabrera is more productive than Bartlett
Gwynn is more productive than Maybin
Venable is more productive than Ludwick
Blanks is more productive than Venable & Denorfia
Nobody can be more productive Eckstein
3rd & C are the same players so they are a wash
1b is the ONLY spot that is still up in the air.....and nobody knows how big a hit it's going to be yet.....but when you upgrade 5 other positions hell yes it looks better on paper already.....
Paper awards.....
No I wasn't....the upgrades are substantial.....and you have NO idea who is going to play first yet so you are the one jumping to conclusions about how big a hit they are going to take......For instance if they are able to sign Derek Lee it could be far less a hit than you are suggesting
ill agree with your last post. If they sign Lee I might change my stance, but for he time being all the minor upgrades hardly make up for the loss of Adrian.
and note that im still calling them upgrades so I dont understand where you think I said all those players you mentioned are more productive than their replacements.
Yeah I don't see any of these upgrades being substantial. Maybin might finally put it together this year but nothing suggests it. I wouldn't expect much and the Padres have yet to get a deal done for Bartlett. Ludwick played horribly in SD and nothing has replaced Garland. Torrealba is also a much better hitter than Hundley. So far, on paper, this team is nowhere near as good as last year let alone better.
Padres get Eric Patterson as the PTBNL in the AGon deal. Not a bad bench guy to have
Bartlett and ODawg to San Diego.......very nice......both HUGE upgrades over last year
Still doesn't make up for losing Adrian but definitely good moves.

Well according to you people they can't replace Adrian no matter what they do too funny......
It's good to know that it was Adrian that won all 90 of the games last year.....
Can he also walk on water in your world ? Heal the dying ? Is his birthday coming up ?
I don't think I claimed any one of those three statements.
I simply said when your offense loses Adrian Gonzalez picking up Cameron Maybin and the two infielders we picked up hardly makes up for the lost production.
Look, I may not like the timing of the trade but I'm still not against trading Adrian considering his contract demands. Furthermore, I'm not even saying they cannot compete this year. I just think it's a huge stretch to say this team is "better on paper" as you claim considering the additions and subtractions.
Does that mean I don't think they can be better on the field when it comes time to prove it? No, but that's not "on paper". "On paper" refers to projections based off past performance, and only Adrian has the past performance that is head and shoulders above any other Padres offensive player from both last year as well as the new ones for this year. On Paper losing Adrian is a pretty huge hit. A hit that's hardly made up for by the additions of Maybin, Hudson, and Bartlett.
You're also ignoring the loss of Jon Garland. Is Dustin Mosley supposed to be better than him?
And I never said Adrian cannot be replaced, but for the time being he has not been. We cannot assess the team based on Derrek Lee playing first base because they have not signed him. For the time being the team is hardly better on paper. Even if they were to sign Lee he's still a downgrade from Adrian...but it would make the hit much better.

Well good HWood because I didn't say this team was better than it was when it ENDED the season last year did I ? Maybe you should re-read what was written because you are arguing something that was never said, implied or suggested......I made it VERY clear that I was comparing the team that STARTED last year to the team they could be STARTING this next season with.....And as of right now it's better OVERALL......even with the loss of AGon, and depending on who we replacing him with it could be much better overallI simply said when your offense loses Adrian Gonzalez picking up Cameron Maybin and the two infielders we picked up hardly makes up for the lost production.
So, you think adding Ryan Ludwick to the list of "upgrades" suddenly makes up for Adrian on paper?
And why do you continue to ignore the pitching staff and the loss of Jon Garland?
I also find it funny that you're lecturing me on re-reading what was posted when in your last post you perpetrated like I was claiming Adrian can never be replaced, was the sole reason they won the 90+ games, and can walk on water.
