He seems to be doing fairly well this year, but I've grown a bit weary of trying to rely on fringe players who come in and do fairly well the year prior.
Of course, if we don't keep Gerut then I'm forced to wonder who we put there instead.

You don't think the Padres can do better than Gerut?
I think they can. The question is, can they settle for him so they can focus on other positions?
Or do you think he'd revert back enough to make that an unwise decision?

Gerut looked DAMN good at Shea this past week....but I don't know if he can keep it up. I mean, I know he's having a good year, but it'd be tough to have a winning team with (the old) Jody Gerut in the starting lineup every day.
He doesn't have a track record for him to be counted on. I would keep him around as a 4th OFer but would still have to look for starters. Padres still have Giles, Headley and Hairston for next year.
I agree with Reefer. I mean, he's had a good year, and if he impresses in ST, and one of those guys gets put at a different position, maybe he can start, but if not, it wouldn't be a big deal to keep him to play a 4th OF, but Endy Chavez style....a key reserve.

He's good to have in case Giles breaks down, no doubt.
See this is the problem with the Pads since day one. They don't give these guys time to mature before they send them off. That is what the minor leagues are for. They are so busy trying to find the next great player that they send dudes away before they are even ready. Think X Nady and so many others.
GO PADRES AND ANGELS ALL THE WAY IN 2008

w/o question he's a keeper, and we can likely still sign him on the cheap, and I'd go so far as to give him a multi-year deal with incentives and escalators.....he could bridge the gap until Hunter/Tekotte are/if ready
