CLEVELAND — Chase Headley has been summoned here to join the Padres, possibly as soon as today's game against the Indians, apparently to play almost every day at either third base or in the outfield.
General Manager Kevin Towers would not confirm that Headley will be activated today, but allowed that the switch-hitting rookie was not in the Portland Beavers lineup for last night's game at Fresno and is "on his way" to Cleveland. If thrown into action today, Headley would give third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff only his second day off this season or right fielder Brian Giles a chance to rest a sore shoulder.
Towers said Headley, who's overcome a slow April with a resurgence over the past several weeks, "definitely" will play in the Hall of Fame Game against the Chicago Cubs on Monday in Cooperstown and surely will be with the Padres when they open a three-game series on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. In all probability, because the Padres are so lacking in infield depth, one of the outfielders will be moved to make room for Headley.
