OFers that could make a difference......not including the guys that should have made the team out of spring......some of these likely aren't available, but I saw this and it shows some names and ideas.....
WillitsBruce
Rasmus
Maybin
Snider
Ellsbury
McCutchen
Martinez
Gonzalez
Laporta
Schafer
Heyward
Tabata
Jackson
Gomez
Jennings
Crisp
...and likely more than this if the trade is right....
He should have delt with CF the moment it was CLEAR Edmonds was done.......and that moment came and went about 2 or so weeks ago....shoring up the defense in CF and getting someone that can actually DO something on offense helps this team by leaps and bounds.......
the bullpen might work itself out when Hensley and Hampson get back soon.......
LF is the other mess, and if Headley continues to surge now that he's done being pissed off.....either he or Gerut or both should be up and on this team.......
Hell if nothing else Gerut should be starting either in CF or LF tomorrow
I'd say at least half that quoted list is unavailable.
As for Center field, yeah it'd be nice if he got someone better than Edmonds there, but with the way the bullpen, Germano, Maddux even, and the rest of the line up outside Adrian and Kouz are performing it really wouldn't have made any real difference.
We'd maybe be in 4th place right now instead of last.
I'm not so convinced Reggie Willits would make much of a difference, either.
He's become the latest Padres fan obsession, but he's really not that good.

Been waiting for this topic to pop up.....

It doesn't have to be Reggie Willits.......as was said in the post.......hell Kenny Lofton, bringing up Gerut etc would upgrade this team on two sides of the ball.......and yes that will help......you can't suggest that if CF was producing with the bat (at all), while not misjudging ball after ball that it wouldn't affect this team......that's crazy talk
This year has been a giant cluster**** of bad luck, old players finally showing their age, players underperforming, and every small gamble KT making not panning out.
And that's not a candy bar, I'll tell you that right now. Milk chocolatey cluster****s don't exist. Full of peanuts and ****. Nougatey ****.

I didn't say it wouldn't help, I'm saying it wouldn't help so much that we'd suddenly be a good team in playoff contention.
My argument is, getting someone like Lofton, sure that'd be worth the gamble, but I'm not so sure I'd want to make a move for someone that would require giving up our top prospects if it'd mean we're still missing the playoffs.
Everyone thinks that a GM should be able to wave a magic wand and make the team good.
Then reality strikes and they are forced to realize the truth.

First of all, nice Dane Cook reference. Second of all, how would getting Lofton require giving up anyone...isn't he a free agent?
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.
Ah, give me something clever to say here.

I started the Cut Jim Edmonds Jihad so I'm not completely disagreeing with you here.
I just think it's a bit of a stretch to presume that Towers isn't "doing his job" just because he has yet to bring in one position player and then to go on and insinuate that that's all he needs to do to fix the mess that is the 2008 Padres thus far.

KT is in Portland TODAY..........So I'll relent for a few days on this unless he returns to SD without players in tow.....in which case I'll p/u where I left off.......
How did this thread start? I see there is a quote from Pads but where did it come from? You guys know I thought the Pads had a lousy offseason and that they botched the whole Headley/Kouz position mess but one CFer isn't going to solve anything. This team signed players that struck out way too much and no offense can click with that going on. The OF as a whole is a mess and Taguchi has been awful. Towers did a poor job this offseason and you guys will have to endure it just as I am with the Giants and their awful offseason and piss poor managing skills from you guys' old friend Bruce Bochy.
