I guess the 29 HRs, 90+ RBis, and the .925 OPS didn't mean shit because he hit a few to the warning track.
All well, you're entitled to your opinion

If the Padres work out a deal next season, the market value won't be that high. It will remain around the Zambrano/Zito area. Plus they can structure the contract in a way that's favorable to both parties like the Zito deal. Absolutely the Padres can get it done if they quit making other dumb moves.
So he was slightly overpaid and you're making it out as though they gave that money to a 10 HR guy lucky enough to be on a major league roster.
Furthermore you have yet to counter-argue the points made in regards to Nevin, who was a 40 HR guy when he was resigned.

Here is an excerpt from a story in the Sports Business News entitled "The Haves And Have Nots" by Howard Bloom.
"Two of the best examples that separate how the Yankees and Red Sox do business as opposed to how the Blue Jays can manage their teams are Carl Pavano’s Yankees contract, and Matt Clement’s Red Sox deal. Both players signed four year contracts worth around $40 million each prior to the 2005 season. Neither pitcher is in the plans for the Yankees and Red Sox in 2006 or 2007. They may well pitch again for the Yankees and Red Sox that will pay each pitcher $10 million for the 2007 and 2008 seasons but the Yankees and Red Sox both moved on as businesses. They’ll meet the contractual obligations they have to both players but they’ve already written off the two contracts.
Often injured A.J. Burnett has four years and more than $45 million left on the free agent contract he signed with the Blue Jays prior to the start of the 2006 season. The difference, the Blue Jays need Burnett to stand and deliver, they cannot be reasonably expected to shrug their shoulder and say “oh well it didn’t work out, we’ll go out and sign Daisuke Matsuzaka or Andy Pettitte as replacement parts"
Substitute the Padres in for the Blue Jays and Jake Peavy in for A.J. Burnett and maybe it will enlighten.
IF the Padres sign Jake to the deal he is "worth",and it doesn't work out,for whatever reason(injury, lack of performance, etc.),the Team can't just go sign another #1 Starter!
This excerpt was preceded by data concerning the income the Yankees and Red Sox bring in from NESN and the YES network.....the Padres have no such income.
Fair enough.
To be quite honest, I do think that one was questionable....I simply understood why someone (being KT) would consider extending him considering the situation at the time.
I can certainly understand reasons not to do so, even at the time of the extension, as well.
I usually only defend the resigning when someone makes a statement that implies that only an idiot would have resigned him at the time, focusing mainly one what took place afterwards.

Leo and Reefer shake hands and walk their separate ways
You still haven't answered my question Reefer. Who, with the exception of Jake and Khalil, who really haven't given the Padres much of anything in the last 2 playoff appearances, from the Padres minor league system, have done ANYTHING for the Padres in the last 2 seasons?

At the risk of speaking for Reefer, I think he was more trying to get at the concept of nobody helping from the farm being another knock on our GM.
If that is, indeed, what he was getting at I feel compelled to remind him that Kevin Towers is no longer in charge of the draft, and hasn't been since he took Matt Bush 1st overall.

If I'm wrong about the way he meant it, then it's my bad. But he responded to someone posting that the Padres had ZERO help from their farm system the last 2 seasons, which is pretty much correct.

I think the Padres try to get a deal done with him in the offseason or next year before he hits FA.......they will try, and try hard, and if Peavy does in fact wish to remain here, he will have that available to him. The money will be big, the contract will be fair sized, the question will lie on Peavy's shoulders about whether he wants to remain here or not.......not whether the Padres will try to resign him........that's foolish to even discuss.........of course they will try.........they aren't overspending now on FA's so they will have financial flexibility to try and resign the existing stars......why don't people get this ? Is it such a simple concept that it goes over your heads.........ugh!!
And the Nevin and Klesko deals were only bad deals once they were restructured and back loaded due to the Petco court holdups.....otherwise from what I remember they were very fair when originally signed for what the output they were giving......
The big problem with your reasoning here is that Pavano was a guy with a losing record when he signed and Clement was a guy who bounced around and was never above a #3 starter. Burnett was a guy with a history of problems and was a health risk to start off with and he too had a losing record. Peavy has no history of injuries, is reaching his prime, has a winning record and is a name fans are familiar with pertaining to SD. The Padres can afford this risk since they do have Young to take the role as ace if in fact Peavy was to get hurt. Not one team loses an ace then goes out and signs one that year. Every single contract given has a risk factor involved.
