NL Rookie of the Year Discussion

Saw the discussion going in the trade rumors thread, I figured I'd throw something up here instead to get full response. Below are the season numbers for the 7 or so best NL rookies this season.

Chris B. Young(OF-ARI) .249 AVR, 9 HR, 25 RBI, 27 R, 7 SB, .706 OPS

Josh Hamilton(OF-CIN) .255 AVR, 9 HR, 20 RBI, 23 R, 3 SB, .823 OPS

Kevin Kouzmanoff(3B-SD) .227 AVR, 5 HR, 28 RBI, 16 R, 0 SB, .679 OPS

Joe Smith(RP-NYM) 2-0, 2.48 ERA, 1.31 WHIP 31 K in 29 IP(32 games, all in relief)

Henry Owens(RP-FLA) 2-0, 1.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 16 K in 23 IP, 4 Saves(22 games in relief)

Micah Owings(SP-ARI) 4-1, 3.84 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 38 K in 58.2 IP(11 games, 10 starts)

Jason Hirsh(SP-COL) 3-6, 4.78 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 58 K in 84.2 IP(14 games, all starts)

Still very wide open at this point, definately nobody running away with it. I think Owings is the early favorite(despite getting skipped in the rotation early in the season), with Hamilton/Young running second and third, in whichever order.

Definately an opening for Kouzmanoff to slip right through there, though.

Here is one that could happen,



Ryan Braun(MIL)-bats 3rd in their line-up and his numbers are improving, especially since he has only been here a few weeks!!! Keep an eye on him.

But seriously, if he bats like that the rest of the season, he's definately the guy.

Kouz better start stealing some bags. We had this conversation on another forum and I just dont think he belongs. He has the worst fielding % in the bigs for guys with a minumum of like 25 games, and while I know most of it is based on batting not fielding, as a whole player he is just no where near the best and does not deserve that award at this point IMO.

If he keeps throwing the way he's throwing until the end of the season, he'll be a shoo-in for the NL rookie of the year gig.
