San Diego Padres right-hander Jake Peavy has been voted National League Pitcher of the Month and Oakland Athletics right-hander Dan Haren has earned American League Pitcher of the Month honors for May, it was announced today.
Peavy whose 0.79 ERA led the Major Leagues in May, posted a 4-0 record during the month. Over 34.0 innings pitched, he allowed only three earned runs and no more than two earned runs in an outing. He recorded 39 strikeouts, including consecutive 10-strikeout performances on May 6th and May 11th. Jake Peavy is a one-time National League All-Star and was a member of Team USA during the inaugural World Baseball Classic. This is his second career National League Pitcher of the Month Award.
Other pitchers receiving votes were Padres' teammates Chris Young (4-1, 1.13 ERA, 39 SO) and Trevor Hoffman (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 saves); Atlanta's John Smoltz (4-1, 1.66 ERA, 35 SO); Philadelphia's Cole Hamels (5-1, 4.14 ERA 49 KO); and Milwaukee's Francisco Cordero, who posted a (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 9 saves).
