Is their 2nd series at home?
Are they possibly saving Schmidt to the first game there?
The Padres did that with David Wells in 2004 and Jake Peavy in 2005 with the intensions of the home crowd seeing their first game.

I agree, I think you've got to start Schmidt on Opening Day, but I guess that's Grady's decision right. As far as the battle for #5, I think Kuo is the right way to go, I just don't think Billingsley is quite ready yet and Hendrickson didn't pitch that well last season for the Dodgers.

This is why I had asked where they were opening the season......road opener and home opener are rarely the same person...and home opener is the most important for fans, so you'll see the staff 'ace' in that role typcially
With the way the schedule and rotation are setup...neither lowe or schmidt will get to pitch in the home opener...that honor goes to Mr. Brad Penny. So even if you were to flip flop and make Schmidt the #1 starter...him and Lowe would still not pitch opening day...or even in the series at all.
Maybe it was a respect and seniority pick. Lowe and Grady have been together for more than a few years now...and really, when you compare the numbers, Schmidt and Lowe were pretty much identical pitchers last year.
Lowe = 218 IP, 3.63 ERA, 1.27 WHIP
Schmidt = 213 IP, 3.59 ERA, 1.26 WHIP
It's a toss up and can go either way. If it was me, I would have made Schmidt the #1 for the aforementioned reason of sandwiching Lowe inbetween the hard throwing Schmidt and Penny...but oh well, you cant really go wrong either way.
My second prediction: The Dodgers face the Padres for a three game set beginning April 13 (Friday the 13th). The rotation stacks up with the Padres facing Lowe, Schmidt, and Penny. My prediction is that the Padres dont have a prayer. (This site needs a smiley with a little broom sweeping some dust or something to that effect)
and my prediction is that we'll beat Schmidt into 4th inning submission once again.....
Any idea who we have going.........Peavy, CY, Maddux maybe ??

I guess I've always overlooked the "more" link next to the smileys. didnt know there was a
anyways, I'm not sure who the padres have pitching in that series. I only figured it out for the dodgers. the 5th starter will get skipped the first time around because of a day off after the Milwaukee series
Overlooking something.......a Dodger fan..........

Penny did pretty good against the Padres in 2005, but other than that San Diego has owned these two for the past three years.
