It was a good p/u....but I'm not sure if it will ever be a good deal for them...
What's really sad is that there are still people who think we should offer someone a contract like that....

The Yankees would like to move Johnson in order to better use that $16 million to try and lure Roger Clemens back. I think most teams are looking at Randy Johnson from more of a marketing basis rather than that top of the rotation production. I say that because the Diamondbacks for instance know that since RJ was a fan favorite during his days in Arizona that many people would love to see him win his 300th game as a Diamondback. Not only love to be able to witness it, but pay alot to do so. However, I cannot say the same for the Padres although I am sure it is a perk.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett
The only reason I would hesitate to make a deal for RJ is the 2 year extension that he wants from the team that deals for him. The only problem that Arizona is having right now is, they already owe him $40m in deferred money and now to get wrapped up in $16m more, plus a 2 year extension.....I don't think that's a smart move for them to make, fan perk or not.

The thing is the Dbacks can't make this deal as they only have $10 million to spend and Johnson over extends that budget unless they defer more money which it doesn't seem that Johnson wants to do that.
Zito over the next 7 years=120 wins and like someone else brought up, this deal will seem like a bargain in two years. The Giants had to get a star and a franchise name and signing him for that long was necessary. The deal is probably bad for Zito because he wanted to play for a contender and the Giants are not going to be that in '07. It possible since its the NL West and no one really improved themselves that much but I doubt it happens. Again only time will tell but this guy is only making 2.4 mil more than Schmidt and for a reason, he's younger, better, more reliable and left-handed.
Then again
The Diamondbacks have reportedly requested a 72-hour window in order to negotiate an extension with Randy Johnson.
The request could be granted before the end of the day. If true, this should mean the players involved in the Johnson trade have been agreed to. The East Valley Tribune reported Sunday that the Yankees could get two players from a group of four: Brandon Medders, Dustin Nippert, Ross Ohlendorf and Micah Owings.
I'm sorry, but 18 mil per year is NOT a bargain.Originally Posted by love_that_reefer

Mike Mussina made $19 mil at 38 so yeah it is.
Someone else getting paid insane money doesn't make another equally insane contract a bargain.

Yeah it does. That's how the market works. Sorry if you think otherwise.
When you can count on one hand how many pitchers got paid the same range that Zito is going to get paid in the history of the game...it's not a bargain.

Like I said, we shall see. Just like Gil Meche's contract makes Kris Benson's look like a bargain. Both outrageous but that's how the market works. In a couple of years, you will see it again. There were four $100 mil dollar contracts in this year alone and that number will go up over time.
Looking like a bargain and being a bargain are very different things....one is an illusion, the other is reality..... as I said before even Kevin Browns contract isn't a bargain now a days....and Zito's is even worse......
Brown didn't live up to it. Can't exactly say that about Zito can you?
Zito could win 3 CY young in SF and he still won have earned that contract....and I said that Zito was a good p/u for you, but the contract was insane and is not, and will not be considered a bargain....
Be happy you have him for sure...I would be....but for me....not at that price...no thanks....we're too close to actually contending....and shooting our perverbial wad on a single outlandish contract is a bad move for us....you guys on the other hand are "rebuilding" and over the next few years will look to add to your team.....we're looking for two pieces....hoping that Kouz is one , Giles pans out, and that leaves LF.....the rotation is pretty well set with only the #5 to ponder....and quite frankly, damn near any arm can fill that hole if you really want to get down to it....IMO....but Wells would be a nice lefty anchor.....
Oh and Zito can go down to injury also.....I don't think he will, but he could...and then he wont live up to it either....
