did you mean curse?
I don't think Magadan is going to be curing anything in Boston.

I still think they will try and find a stop gap player for next year to give this guy one more year of seasoning in the minors, but if he pulls off a good year in Peoria Saguaros and a good training camp, I would not put it past them to take a shot with him in 2007.

Can't say as I like what I see so far, ya the adverage might get up to 2.7 million soon, but the reality is that is the top 5 or less of the Pads, a lot of our guys are making the minimum and whereas that is a lot for me, it is not much in their eyes and I can not see them wanting to hang around here much longer than they have to when they can get out.

All the more reason to lock them up before they become Arbi eligible if we have plans to keep them....like AGon next year.....he shouldn't be allowed to sniff arbi....we should lock him up, lock CY up, lock Barfield up, Hensley, Bard, etc....before we give them a chance to go elsewhere...
There's also talk that MLB is going to end the draft pick compensation when a team loses a free agent. For example, if the A's lose Barry Zito to free agency, the only thing the A's get in return is freed up salary.

Yup.....I like that idea.........should make for some more movement of players at the deadline, instead of teams letting them just walk knowing that they will get at least a draftpick....now they will likely make deals
I have always wondered about that, why on earth would they give a draft pick out as a reward for trying to screw over a player? If they want something in return for a player, they should do something before the guy walks, not after he rejects their offer for more money elsewhere.
I agree we should start locking these guys up, but the Pads MO is they wont do anything before the year before their arbitration year at the soonest. That is unfortunate but true.

Yep, more movement from players at the deadline...away from the Padres.Originally Posted by padrefanforever
Lack of draft pick compensation is a bad thing for small and mid market teams (such as the Padres)
Now, when someone walks for more money, money the Padres can't afford to invest in one player, they get jack shit in compensation.

Hollywood.....I think that's a knee jerk reaction and don't necessarily buy into it.....If this franchise continues on it's current path of winning divisions, and going to the playoffs........more and more guys are going to want to play for a winning team in a great city.......If Petco continues to be a pitchers paradise, then more and more guys are going to want to pitch here as well.....if this happens we should never be left wanting for players....
What we have to do is kick this small market, discount, label that we've been given.....once that happens I don't think it will matter at all how big a market we are...we'll have the personell, we'll be winning, our farm should be strong, etc....
It's not as if ompensation draft picks are what make up this team ....do we even have any playing currently ?
Saying San Diego needs to kick the small market label is like saying Denver needs to kick the "Mountainous" label, or that Arkansas needs to kick the "southern" label.

A more detailed write up on the new agreement, http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/a...=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Doesn't look like anything will really change, just the customary increase in wages and such.
The biggest change I spotted was in free agence,
"• After Major League players file for free agency in the one-week period that begins at midnight the day after the World Series, all subsequent deadline dates are eliminated: Dec. 7 (for club to offer arbitration), Dec. 19 (for players to accept), Jan. 8 (last day the old club could re-sign its own free agent) and May 1 (first day a club's former player could re-sign with its former club if he went past Jan. 8 date). Also, the tender date for clubs to offer contracts to all players has been moved up from Dec. 20 to Dec. 12. And players traded in the middle of a multi-year contract can no longer demand a trade."
Now that will be interesting, but the rest is small stuff at most.
