The FO might be talking up Sledge in a farce attempt to calm the public down in the event that they fail to acquire a real left fielder.
I don't see why they wouldn't attempt to acquire someone better. Sledge isn't exactly a young'n.

30 isn't young.........
He's not exactly good, which is more important.
He's going to kill someone out there also......damn near did twice last year.....that alone should get him a ticket outta town
While this is true, at least if he was young you can hope for improvement, however slight those chances may be.Originally Posted by love_that_reefer

Would anyone be up for bringing Mark Sweeney back to town?
Dec 20 - Now that Ryan Klesko has landed in San Francisco, first baseman Mark Sweeney is wondering whether the Giants plan to trade him, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Klesko will see time in left field and at first base, where he could work himself into a platoon with Rich Aurilia and make Sweeney expendable.
"If everybody's healthy, the writing is on the wall," Sweeney told the newspaper. A trade isn't out of the question. GM Brian Sabean is focused on adding a starting pitcher but isn't done with the offense. "We'll be tweaking the roster right through to Opening Day," Sabean said.

Randy Johnson heading to San Diego?
This according to NY Daily News.....

"San Diego right now appears to be the most likely destination for the five-time Cy Young Award winner"......"In exchange for Johnson, it's possible the Yankees could be looking at San Diego reliever Scott Linebrink, a righthander they've always liked."

Clearly, Manny Ramirez and Randy Johnson have similar values now, since they'd both bring back Scott Linebrink.
Oi.

Then out of fairness to the others you will be Slagathor.
The Manny Ramierez rumors "started with Scott Linebrink"
The current Randy Johnson rumors involve Scott Linebrink being "the centerpiece"

Sean Burroughs must return the Padres. I like him 10 times more after watching him sing "Gasolina" under the influence.
"You're an ass, Sweeney."
This RJ deal is a bad deal for us....the Yank want to dump all 16M of RJ's contract..........and we'd be giving up our best trade piece in Linebrink....I say pass on RJ and sign Wells....I'd rather have Wells as our #5, and use Linebrink to make a deal for a LFer, than RJ as our #2-3 and eat up the rest of our available money....
PASS on RJ
