Peavy opens series against Giants
The Padres hit the road for a 10-game swing, finding themselves in a pretty good position before making stops in San Francisco, Cincinnati and Los Angeles.
With a 5-1 homestand, the Padres are breathing down the necks of the Dodgers, just one game back in the National League West heading into Friday's series opener against the Giants. San Diego also has a little more room in the NL Wild Card race, pulling out to a three-game lead on second-place Florida and Philadelphia.
The Friars finally straightened out their troubles at PETCO Park, but now head out on the road, where they have been much more successful this season. They are now 38-37 at PETCO, but 35-29 on the road this season.
After an off-day Thursday, Jake Peavy will face Matt Cain on Friday. Peavy has been battling a badly bruised fourth toe on his left foot, suffered after bumping it on some furniture in his home. He needed novocaine to get through his last start on Saturday, a brilliant two-hitter against the Reds.
The right-hander almost always pitches well in the midst of strange injuries or illness, and Friday will be another test of that.
