I don't think that Walker is going to be their one move for the trading season, I think there's a waiver deal yet to be pulled off. We'll just have to wait and see what's going to happen. Walker will get the start tonight, hopefully he gives this offense the boost they didn't get last night.

BTW, Bellhorn is batting an even .200, why wasn't he the one being released?

Eric Young wasn't too far behind, at least Bellhorn can field more positions than EY can.

That is, 4-6 positions to the 0 that EY is capable of fielding.

You did, I just don't understand why you release a Vinny Castilla, who still can give you more defensively than Bellhorn, yet they keep Mark and he's damn near at the Mendoza Line?

I agree...but the debate didn't start off asking about Vinny, it started off asking about EY.

That being said, I know why they released Vinny when they did...it just turned out to be a mistake in retrospect.

They needed to call Mike Thompson back up to spot start for Chris Young and the only people they were able to send down that was on the 25 man roster at the time were people who were too vital to the team to drop.

So, since they had every intention of replacing him within a week anyways, they let Vinny go to free up the roster spot.

As it turned out it ended up being a mistake as they had to "settle" for Todd Walker.

I'm sure if they could go back they'd release Blum or Bellhorn instead.

I think you'll see Bellhorn be put through waivers, don't be surprised if Boston comes calling if Lowell is out for any length of time.

you're right, KT never promised. But I recall him saying getting an everyday 3rd baseman was his top priority.

Don't get me wrong I view ANYONE at 3rd a major improvement over Bellhorn and Blum. But was the market that bad this year that we traded for a guy who hasn't played 3rd since how many years ago?

I guess the point of releasing Castilla was that he wasn't cutting it offensively. But at what cost? There were several plays in games after Castilla's release where I thought to myself.. Vinny woulda made that play.

I thought the Padres offense were decent enough where we should've focused on getting another starting arm.

You're right, he did say it was his top priority.

He also said he didn't want to get rid of Linebrink, no matter what.

That may be ill advised (I think it is) but i'm inclined to think that was the breaking point in any discussed deals.
