that's a cliche, all that basically says is "all you have to do is score more points than the other team."
why thank you, John Madden

Yes and know......there is a ton of truth to it.......and tracking a hitters production after the 7th inning is part of that......If you can't hit after the 7th you're not going to win squat....especially if your bullpen emplodes like ours did last night
That's also like saying that you only have to win in September if you want to make the playoffs.
Basically, it's like saying games in April and May don't matter.
If an offense provides you 8 runs, even if it's all done in the early innings, the bullpen should damn well be able to hold it.

Not really.........but it does kind of apply.......if you can stay within 2 games and then you get red hot in Sept. you will more than likely win ....so I guess you're right....
Nobody is saying that early innings don't matter.......in fact I said that you have to stay close
Or if you get way out on top early on you can still "back into the playoffs"
It's all about scoring more than the other team, or winning more games if we're talking standings.
It's irrelevant when you amass those runs (or wins) as long as it ends up greater than everyone else.

If you keep the ballgame to within one run either way 'til the 7th inning, and then play your best baseball.....you're in great shape for a win....
If you play your best baseball in the first 5 innings and fall apart, you watched last nights Padres/ Rockies game.....how'd that work out for us ?
but my point is them "falling apart" in the latter end of the game is more the fault of the pitching/defense that allows them to come back than it is the offense who gave them the 8 runs.

I think I covered the pitching mess and defense letting us down.....but had our offense not quit and gone to sleep we might have scored 20 runs, making this whole arguement go away
Maybe its time we let Hoffy rest for a long while.
and I counter argue that the offense should not be expected to score 20 runs.Originally Posted by padrefanforever

Padres lose again and the Dodgers stole Wilson Betemit right out from under the Padres.
It's time for Kevin Towers to show he's serious about keeping the Padres in front for the rest of the year. Greg Maddux, Morgan Ensberg and whoever else, GET IT DONE KT!

I think losing Baez helped the Dodgers more than trading a 3rd base prospect of almost equal value as the one they got in return.

I sure hope Kevin Towers pulls off a big deal or two before Monday. I think Greg Maddux is a must at this point....

i'm almost certain that if (or hopefully when) KT pulls of a deal it won't be till Sunday night, due mainly to the schedule.

Well, the Maddux sweepstakes has been narrowed.....
Padres?
Dodgers?
West is best for Maddux
Jul 28 - The field for Maddux has been narrowed to only two teams, reports ESPN.com's Jayson Stark -- the Padres and the Dodgers. The Cubs have been talking to both West Coast teams about how either one could absorb the $3 million Maddux is still owed. The more the Cubs are willing to pay, the better the player will be that they'll get in return
