so you're basically arguing out of sheer principal?
Am I wrong in assuming that Todd Walker can continue to hold down third base as well as he has since his acquisition, minus that first game, and you'd still be perturbed about the whole ordeal?

If Walker turns into a GGer that's not the point......the point is they don't have a crystal ball......and didn't get us a 3bag.....simple as that.....Hell for all we know lefty Klesko can play 3rd....but he should never get the shot should he ?
Todd Walker came up as a third baseman. The only reason his ability to play there is in question is because he hasn't played there since 1997.
I agree it's not a wise idea going into it, but it's not like he was their first target either.
This whole debate started because you wanted to put forth an argument against my claim that Todd Walker playing third base for us improves the team....even if it isn't quite as much as it could've been.
My argument is that he does improve the team as our starting third baseman....especially if he continues to play the base well defensively as he has been doing, minus the first game with the two throwing errors.
And I never said anything about gold gloves.

If they take a shot in the dark and it works out great.......doesn't mean it was the right move to make......and during a pennant race is my biggest complaint.....we're losing our lead....could be gone tonight
I wasn't too fond of the Mark Loretta signing when it was first done, either.
There's a reason these guys are paid to make these moves and we're just playing armchair GM.

and we're not losing our lead because of Todd Walker

Further if you sign Walker in the offseason, and sell him as a 3bag, give him time to figure out how to play.....and then he contributes.......I'm down with that.... but not in a pennant run........you don't do that....
Betemit was less of a ? than Walker, and we'd have gotten a possible future stud for someone that hasn't contributed much to our 2006 season... and I'm a liney fan....
Walker was a bad move........should it turn out ok great, but you don't get to coach from the position of hindsight do you ?
you're wasting your time trying to convince me that Betimit would've been a better move...i've already said many times that I wish he had traded Linebrink for Betimit.
All i'm saying is that Todd Walker isn't the armageddeon situation you make it out to be.
The guy can hit and appears to be adjusting just fine to third base.

And yes I can "coach" from the position of hindsight when i'm judging moves made by the general manager.
If people want to lynch Kevin Towers for resigning Nevin and Klesko to long term deals when they made sense at the time of the signing I think i'm allowed to call him a genius if Todd Walker turns out to be good defensively at third base along with his more than adaquate bat, while getting him for virtually nothing.

I don't know many people that understand the what's and why's of those signings that will give Towers shit for them.......
I'd blame a few attny's that held up the building of Petco and forced the backloading of the two contracts, and not KT for the signing of them...
Both of those contracts should have run out a year and a half ago...but because of litigation they were strung out a little...
But signing a guy that hasn't played the position we need filled in a decade during a pennant run isn't a good signing........there is no way on the planet you could sell this to anyone not wearing Padre blinders
you see, you and me both agree on Nevin/Klesko....but not many people don't and the concept of judging a move after the fact still applies.
All we can do is scratch our heads when a move is made, but if it turns out to be good can't we accept that maybe, just maybe the guy getting paid millions of dollars a year to make these decisions just might know what he's doing?
Nobody liked handing 2nd base over to a rookie and letting Mark Loretta walk at the beginning of the season, that doesn't seem like such a bad idea anymore...especially since it indirectly landed us Josh Bard and Cla Meredith.
So yes, if Walker continues to field his position as well as he has been I can and will call this a good move on Towers' part.

that is not to say that I still don't want him to try and get a third baseman who's been playing there.

....and I'm calling it a bad move when it's made so I can look back and say...... that I did
....again.....make this move in the offseason, and give him a few months to figure out how to play it.......no prob.......during a pennant run.....no way no how.....terrible move
Most people don't want to know about contracts or why the ballpark was held up or what the consiquences were......they just walk around blind and happy.....thinking that everything is just dandyOriginally Posted by HollywoodLeo
