Padres manager Bruce Bochy said Williams will throw a 50-pitch bullpen on Sunday. He will throw 60 pitches in a start on Thursday for Single-A Lake Elsinore and 75 pitches in a start on June 26 for Triple-A Portland. He is scheduled to come off the disabled list and start one of the July 1 doubleheader games against the San Francisco Giants.
Reliever Doug Brocail, who has been out since the middle of spring training after a pair of heart procedures, is on about the same work schedule as Williams.
Brocail will begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday with Lake Elsinore. He is scheduled to throw single innings Tuesday, Thursday and June 24. He will then join Portland and throw single innings on June 27, 28 and 30.
The return of Williams and Brocail would require moves on the pitching staff.
With all five starters ---- Clay Hensley, Chan Ho Park, Jake Peavy, Mike Thompson and Chris Young ---- throwing well, and no one in the bullpen struggling bad enough to be an obvious candidate for a demotion, Bochy and pitching coach Darren Balsley will have some tough decisions to make.
