No Wagner is known for throwing it 100 pmh and then breaking off that nasty slider so apparently you haven't seen him pitch! If Hoffman can pitch in his 40's, can't see why Wagner can't.Originally Posted by FmrFresnan

Hoffman lasts so long because he relies on the change up. Even his fastball is declining, but because he's so deceptive with his change he gets away with it.

Unlike one guy.........players arm strength, power & speed decline with age.....change ups don't need any of that......in fact, the more tired an arm is, the more effective a change up can be at times....
You guys are making my point. Hoffman still gets the outs because of the speed differentials on his pitches. He still blows guys away with the 88 mph heater because of that changeup. You aren't telling me anything new! Wagner is still throwing 100mph at 35! At 40 its going to be what 94? 93? But it doesn't matter if he still has that slider. Plus pitchers tend to get better with age with the knowledge of the game. See Hoffman!
Do you really think Wagner is going to be throwing in the mid to upper 90s in his 40s?
if he somehow is, then sure, I agree with you.
If he has a great change-up that he can get people out with, then yeah, I agree with you again.

I agree with that......if wagner is tossing 98MPH at 42......then yah....he'll be effective.....but wagner at 92mph unless he figures out a new pitch will be meat IMO
Why couldn't he hit 94mph in five years when he is now hitting 100pmh still? He doesn't have a changeup but a slider that makes people look like shit and just as effective as a changeup. Its an outpitch. To say he doesnt have a shot is silly (Barry Zito Logic)
He has another pitch. READ!Originally Posted by padrefanforever

Name me one 40 year old who throws in the mid 90s consistantly and my opinion of the odds of this happening will increace, ever so slightly
Name me two and I just may full on agree with you.

Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan!!! And they had to pitch more than three outs
made this its own thread, as the Padres do NOT have the best road record anymore.

well, ok. It can happen, and it is likely.Originally Posted by love_that_reefer

Plus its just about location and movement. Rivera has been one of the bgest with just different types of fastballs.
believe me, i'm not so much of a homer that I think Trevor will get the record and keep it till the end of time.
I only started debating against you because you started off pointing out that he throws 100 mph, which is pretty unlikely to be doing in his 40s.
But if he's even throwing in the low to mid 90s in his 40s and hits his spots then he stands a good chance at it.
