nobody has ever said it's impossible to hit it out of PetCo, but the numbers the past two seasons have shown that it's easier to hit it out of all but 2 other NL parks in 2004 and all but 1 NL park in 2005.

I'd be willing to bet it's not quite the same this year, but the first two years of PetCo have supported the claim.

IIRC, even the lowly Padres themselves hit more HRs on the road than they do in PetCo. Interesting note.

Can we end this argument already? We all know that the Padre hitters have had a hard time hitting the ball out of the ballpark, though it seems the visiting players don't have any problem at all doing it.

I agree and I don't agree. I don't see it as an argument but as a fact that the Pads are in denial of.

First, the Pads management are the ones that built the ballpark. Did they even think of the big picture when it came to dimensions and talents and skills of current players, not even to mention the type of players they would have to recruit for the future. The Pads were never long ballers at the Murph, so why build a power park.

Second, it became apparent during the inaugural season that small ball was the game of order. Did they concentrate on that? Hell no. The stigma of the park ruled them. How sad is it that a team has better records on the road than at home? Moving in a section of fence was supposed to help the situation, but that was a joke. Currently no one is hitting over .300.

And, three seasons later the same old story. No long ball, no short ball and inconsistent defense.....

By the time they realized it it was too late, as the bigger contracts were still being paid to those who didn't fit the field (Klesko, Nevin...)

those contracts were signed sealed and delivered at the Q..... they were severly backloaded to offset the lack of monies at the Q.....they were a bad deal from the start, got worse as the years passed, and should serve as a reminder of what the upper management thinks "star calibur" players are..... My only concern is that they will confuse the issue and not give guys like Peavy long term deals locking them up.....

At the same time, let's also hope Peavy desires to stay in San Diego. Otherwise we better prepare ourselves for his departure in 2009 (i think that's when his current one is up) Because even if the Padres offer him a fair deal, if all he wants is the money, I guarantee some larger market that can afford to do so will offer him a well more than fair deal that would cripple the Padres financially....even if it is Jake Peavy.

2008 from what I heard........next year is the year we need to give him his contract.....he shouldn't be allowed to get near FA....not by a longshot IMO

I agree....but if he's in it for the money he won't sign anything offered to him durring the season, knowing full well he'd probablly get better offers elsewhere.

If he has enough loyalty and desire to stay in San Diego he would most definitely entertain offers in the season, and of course i'm obviously not stating the Padres shouldn't persue it, because they'd be complete imbicils not to.

I'm just saying we should prepare ourselves for the inevitable if Jake prefers the bigger contract over staying with the same team.

The fact that he fired Scott Boras in 2002 and the undervalued contract he signed last year are good signs.

I think if they take care of him, he'll stay loyal.........push the thing out 'til the end, and why should he?

I agree they should obviously try to sign him, and I can't think of a single reason why they wouldn't.

"push the thing out to the end"....that could go both ways. They could very well be trying to sign him and he just doesn't agree with anything they offer him.
That could either be on the Padres for offering too little, or on Jake for demanding too much.

The sad thing is, since we'll never know what goes on behind closed doors, everyone will blame Padres management regardless if he were to leave.

true that we may never know the $$$ being discussed, but if the Padres keep the public in the loop with regards to " we're in negotations with..." then that's all we can really ask.....the avg. fan more than anything wants to know that something is being done......in the past that just hasn't been the case....
