I have not heard that either. I checked the Padres website as well as Yahoo Sports and MLB.com but have still yet to see that confirmed, though I can't wait to see Atkins play.
the other forum that I got the info from said it was stated on XX (former mighty 1090)Originally Posted by FmrFresnan

Leo, I just heard Darren confirm that as well....so we'll see how this goes. I think Sledge is a good player with good speed, but he just doesn't look comfortable yet.
unless you blow the A's away, he's gonna walk at the end of the year...
Wouldn't Beane rather get something for him rather than nothing?

he'll get a 1st round pick and a sandwich (between 1st and 2nd round) pick...so either way we're getting prospects...plus we're in it to win this year. No prospects we would get for him will help us win this season.
The way Zito is throwing, he's not exactly helping the A's.....
why do you want him then?
To be honest, no. Unless he fixes what's wrong with his location on his pitches, he's going to continue to get lit up. I know the Padre fans in here want to see him in San Diego and maybe that helps him, but the way he's pitching right now, I don't want him, just my opinion.
he had one really bad game...hitters are only hitting .212 off him (below career average), he only has 6 walks, his WHIP is 1.19, his K:BB is 2.50 (higher than career average), 9.42 K/9, and he's only given up 1 homer. It's just his ERA and record that make it seem like he's been horrible. He's still got another 29 - 30 starts left this year, so I'm not too worried.
The only game that Zito really showed what he can do was against Seattle. Though, you can't say Seattle is really a contender. He needs to pitch better against teams you can say are "contenders". But, you are right, he's only 3 starts in, so he has plenty of time to figure things out.

his peripherals are pretty decent, so I expect the ERA to come down and wins to come.
Another example of why Spring Training numbers mean JACK! Chris Young was getting lit up and had a double digit ERA, he now is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA....Dewon Brazelton was the Padres best pitcher during the Spring, he is 0-2 with an ERA I'm not going to post out of respect for Padre fans like myself.
Brazelton is walking around wearing a Christmas Tree costume.....it's the only thing that gets lit up like he did this year
