Unfortunately for Satchell, he retired at age 46 on only a partial pension from baseball because he had three too few innings pitched to qualify for a full pension. At the time, it would have taken an act of Congress for baseball to capitulate and grant Satchell his full pension.

Never one to miss an opportunity for a promotion, especially a grandiose promotion, Charlie Finley brought Satchell Paige to the Kansas City Athletics at the tender age of 58 to start against the Boston Red Sox.

The 58 year old Paige threw three shutout innings, striking out one and giving up only one hit to Carl Yastrzemski, and received his full major league pension.

Almost everybody who describes this event wrongfully assumes it was done simply as a publicity stunt. For all his well-advertised faults and machinations, few people gave Charlie Finley the credit he often deserved for simple acts of good will.

I'm sure, but as it says that wasn't the only reason he did it. regardless, he didn't have to do that and no one else did.
