Carpenter takes aim at becoming the first Cardinals 20-game winner since Matt Morris in 2001. He's also got a fine shot at something much bigger: becoming only the second pitcher in franchise history, along with Bob Gibson, to win the Cy Young Award. He's among the league leaders in virtually every major category. Since the start of June, Carpenter is 12-1 with a 1.45 ERA, 114 strikeouts, 20 walks and eight homers allowed in 130 1/3 innings.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner is winless in his last four starts -- but he didn't allow any earned runs in two of those starts and allowed just two earned runs in another. The Astros have been shut out six times when Clemens, the Major League ERA leader, has been on the mound.

You can place all the value you want on wins, considering "great" pitchers of the past like Russ Ortiz and Rick Helling have won 20 games before, but there is no denying that Roger Clemens has etched in stone something we may never see again unless he out does himself next season. I hope the Rocket racks up another Cy Young.

that's quite a stretch to compare Carpenter's season to those 2 clowns...as he's not just winning, he's among the leaders in all the major categories...more than Clemens.

Better yet, Jeff Bagwell to Abraham Nunez or Chris Burke to So Taguchi.

Ther is no question Clemens has been one of the most productive and greatest pitchers of all time. A sure HOFer. However he does not deserve the Cy Young over Carpenter for what they have each accomplished ths year.

If you evaluate the CY Young winner only by ERA then so far, Clemens is the clear winner. If you evaluate the CY Young winner only by wins, then Carpenter is the clear winner. If you look at all of the stats, then it's very close, but Carpenter edges Clemens in most of them. Wins are overrated, but you can't totally disregard them. Yeah...some lesser players have gotten a lot of wins on good teams, but this isn't the case for Carpenter. His ERA is second in the league only to Clemens. In the big games, he;s pitched well enough to get the win even if his team hasn't scored a lot of runs. Carpenter doesn't exactly have the scariest hitters backing him up. Nunez, Taguchi, Rodriguez, and Mabry are the tougest guys to get out, but despite that, Carpenter is still winning games.
